I came across this really interesting blog post called the “Bible in 66 Verses” on the Lutheran Forum. The author, Sarah Wilson, selected a verse from each book of the Bible that summarizes that book’s content.  How could you use this idea? Read more »

My take on the Genesis flood is a bit different. A very common, perhaps the MOST common world saving strategy is “reward and rescue the good people, marginalize or eliminate the bad people.” This strategy in fact I believe is read onto the Bible.  Read more »

Trying to summarize the Bible in just a few words could be an interesting activity to use in Sunday School with adults or teens. Older children and teens could rewrite the Bible story they studied that day using just nouns and verbs.  Could a Bible story be reviewed by summarizing it in ten words?   Read more »

Scripture’s authority is not like a rule book or an instruction manual that locks us in and orders us around. Its authority is akin to God’s authority – to liberate us and the world from the evils of our own doing and, in the process, to make us more fully human. Read more »

Some people may wonder what it would mean to “celebrate” disability week, because they believe that disabilities are nothing to celebrate. However, we do have reason to celebrate the people in our congregations who live with disabilities. Read more »

One of the biggest challenges of mission service, whether in North America or internationally, is support raising. Some see this as a great opportunity to connect with people, tell ministry stories, and call people to faithful use of the resources that God has given them. Others consider it “begging,” and see it as demeaning to the missionary. What do you think? Read more »

All I can think about is if you sniff in a little bit of pepper - you sneeze. Pepper is used in conjunction with salt - well, most often. When I order a sub from Subway - I only get pepper on it - no salt. I just find that they put on too much salt and it ruins the sub. So I stick with the pepper. Read more »

“Let us sing the books of Moses, of Moses, of Moses. Let us sing the books of Moses, for he wrote the Law.”  Believe it or not, these are the opening lines to a song I learned in College. The professor of Old Testament Survey passed out lyrics set to the tune, “Did you ever see a Lassie,” to help us remember the Old Testament books and classifications. It gave us a good laugh, but it also worked. Whether you’re... Read more »

Long ago, or so I thought, people said that children born with anomalies were warnings to their parents that covenant with the gods had been violated. The Latin word for "to warn" is monere from which comes the English word, "monster." Thus, children (and adults) with disabilities were thought of as monsters to be feared, because they were proof that the gods were angered by violations of their laws.  Read more »

Topics: New to Youth Ministry
Ok, so it sounds elementary to be adding this to the things that any new youth worker should be doing on a regular basis but I do believe that it’s one of those things, just like prayer, that gets pushed to the back burner of your daily schedule. I know for myself this is true. Bible reading and devotions seem to go in waves... Read more »

Understanding your particular giftedness will allow you to focus your primary energy on using the gifts you have in effective ministry while permitting yourself—without guilt!—to say no to other opportunities that may take you away from deploying your gifts. The key to determining whether you are using your spiritual gifts effectively is to assess if you are being fruitful and feeling fulfilled in your ministry. Read more »

The question you want people in your congregation to be asking themselves is “How can my whole life show that Jesus is my Lord?” That’s different than asking, “How much money do I have to give to the church?” Learning to be a good steward of all God has entrusted to us is part of our sanctification and reflects our spiritual walk with God. Your goal is to...  Read more »
