Bethany is a good employee. She quietly performs her tasks, works her regular hours, gets along with others, and is responsible. Joshua is a remarkable employee. He gets the job done also but seems to excel on the job. What are the attributes that make Joshua a remarkable employee and Bethany a good employee?

How about asking a second question, just as real and powerful as how to get rid of a pastor: “Are there ways we could help our pastors grow and flourish in their places of ministry?”

The denominational employees recently completed their annual performance reviews. I don't know anyone who likes to complete evaluations although feedback is important. So I was struck by a recent Alban Institute article on Teams and Performance. The author suggests that we should be constantly reviewing organizational performance

This examination is the last step in a long process of being declared a candidate. I wonder if it is a bit redundant. Before the classical exam the candidate has been through four years of theological education, been examined and approved by the faculty of the seminary, been examined and approved by the Synodical Candidacy Committee and been approved at Synod.

Over the past several years many churches have had check-ups of sorts to look for points of health and places that need work (Natural Church Development surveys, Healthy Churches surveys, WillowCreek Reveal survey, etc.). But when it comes to classes we often just keep going with the way things have always been. We don’t bother to check the health and vitality of this mid-level of church life.

What exactly is a classis? ... Why do we keep having this conversation? Can’t we just figure out what classis is and get on with it? Why do we still talk about classis renewal?

Recently, I have been asked about pastoral evaluations. It is an interesting moment in the life of the pastor. Most often when I have experienced evaluations the elders are also scrambling. The only evaluation they have done is over the coffee table. Never written. Never formal. The first question is usually: how do we do this and what is available to help me do this?

How often do young people get to push their pastor or building committee chair around in a wheelchair? Not only will youth in church learn about accessibility and empathy for people with disabilities, they will provide a valuable service to the church leadership.

Rather than evaluate the success of a small group by the percentage of a church’s people involved, I’m much more likely to ask questions about how people are demonstrating discipleship and mission in their lives. How are people growing in spiritual disciplines? How many are inviting friends to try out the group? How deep are the relationships within the group? How does the group care for one another and their neighbors?

These answers sound so obvious to those of us who have been around small groups for a while, but we should take note of them as we evaluate our groups.

Here is a phenomenal resource tool for all Canadian Youth Workers! In December 2009 I was in Vancouver attending the Canadian Youth Workers Convention as were over 700 other youth workers from Canada and the USA. Being the Denominational Representative to Youth Specialties I was invited, along with 20 other youth leaders, to the unveiling of "What's Happening? State of Youth Ministry In Canada" research findings.

Topics: Why Small Groups?
Missional small groups want to do life together in a way that makes a difference in the world around them. These groups listen to God to find direction on how God might move through them in a way that puts love where love is not. Missional Small Groups demonstrate a life together that is unmistakably salt and light in the community in which they live.
