A couple weeks ago a church called and asked for information on what annual filings are required by churches.  In response to that, I referred the church to a great resource from the IRS, "Tax Guide for Churches and Religious Organizations."   On p. 22 of this resource you will find filing requirements including a list of the forms to file and due dates.   Read more »

 As a church administrator working with various teams, I would often see a need to write something down to clarify a mandate, policy, or how to.  The hard part was getting started. This past weekend I had the privilege of serving as a "Wheaties" adult leader for a weekend retreat ministry called "Teens Encounter Christ."  This student led ministry shows God's love in amazing ways to high school students and challenges them to grow in their faith through talks by students and other well thought out activities. Some churches like to talk about volunteers serving the church.  I would prefer to think of it as members serving the church.  My pastor challenged me to think this way.  If we are members, we don't have a choice of serving, we are the body that serves the church.  How do you empower members for ministry? The denominational employees recently completed their annual performance reviews. I don't know anyone who likes to complete evaluations although feedback is important. The Alban Institute recently posted an article by Susan Beaumont on "Determining Ideal Board Size."  Susan recommends that the ideal size for our governing bodies should be down to five individuals to provide for the most effective problem solving. "The task of the council is defined as the common administration of the church." (Manual of Christian Reformed Church Government, p. 165).  The manual goes on to give some examples of what is meant by "matters of common concern" but allows openness for each church to determine what specific matters should be included in the definition of the task of council.  Read more »

This past weekend I had the pleasure of attending one of my favorite Christmas events at my church--Tour of Tables.  I brought some friends to tour the decorated tables on Friday night and then also attended the brunch and program Saturday morning.  Church members are encouraged to invite their friends and neighbors.  Read more »
