International mission has been communicated most powerfully by pictures of people engaged in ministry and those hearing the Good News about Jesus. Ten students at Dordt College travelled to Mexico to shoot video of ministries going on in that country through Christian Reformed World Missions missionaries and their partners.

The practice of mission work has changed dramatically in recent decades, and the pace of change seems to constantly accelerate. The way that we celebrate missions in the churches should also be dynamic. The idea of a mission emphasis week, often connected to a Faith Promise program for mission support, goes back several decades in CRC history.

Yesterday the church where I am a member had a memorable celebration of Pentecost Sunday. It was the culmination of a year of special focus on the person and work of the Holy Spirit. Our pastor won a grant from the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship and received a sabbatical of four months from his regular duties last year to concentrate on developing a series of worship services, sermons and music that would enable us to become more Alive to the Spirit. A great deal of planning and effort went into this on the part of many people.

Pentecost, with the gift of languages and the power of the Spirit, points powerfully to the worldwide spread of the Gospel. The sin-filled unity of the Tower of Babel was undone by the confusion of languages, but at Pentecost God creates a grace-filled unity in Jesus Christ that extends to "every tribe, language people and nation."
I'm looking forward to preaching a missions message this Sunday. This one deals with the Spirit's work in calling people from an unreached Muslim people group into a living relationship with Jesus Christ.
