Circles of friends with a shared vision are the birthing rooms for Kingdom collaboration. But sometimes circles of friends can become closed networks. Circles of friends can warp into ethnic or denominational bubbles or even just plain Christian bubbles - - bubbles that protect those on the inside from people and ideas that seem different.

One of the biggest challenges of mission service, whether in North America or internationally, is support raising. Some see this as a great opportunity to connect with people, tell ministry stories, and call people to faithful use of the resources that God has given them. Others consider it “begging,” and see it as demeaning to the missionary. What do you think?

When I mention to people that I was a missionary for six years in Eastern Europe, one of the first questions I am often asked is, "Did you have your family with you?" At least sometimes this question has another behind it. "Doesn't raising your children overseas impoverish your children, or put them at risk?" In my case, I would say,

I attended the funeral of one of our former missionaries today. She was 54 and her youngest child is just out of high school. It was a very moving occasion. Remarkable testimonies were given by her sons and brother and a fine message by the pastor, also a former missionary. However, the thing I will most remember is what her friend said in summing up her life. Eileen Wiersma had an infectious enthusiasm. When she found something great, she communicated her enthusiasm by saying, "You gotta come with."
