Christian Reformed World Missions office staff are working with hundreds of volunteers. One of the issues we have faced recently is getting background checks for volunteers to check for any history of criminal activity or abuse. Do you think this is a good practice, or not?

A couple of years ago Pastor Jon De Bruyn approached Christian Reformed World Missions with a proposal to jointly sponsor prayer trips to various mission sites around the world. We are all familiar with trips that involve physical labor, or handing out tracts. But a prayer mission trip was new to many. What would that look like?

Several years ago Pastor Dan Ackerman made a statement that really struck me. He said that today short term missions is what Catechism instruction was: our basic method of discipleship. Short term mission trips went from being an oddity, to an add-on, to something integral to the process of raising our young people as Christians. How do we make the most of them?

How do we increase the odds that STM will make a long-term difference in the lives of our kids long after the suitcases are unpacked and the photo albums are buried in bedroom closets? A two day “Short-Term Missions Effectiveness” Think Tank showed a common theme: we need to do a better job helping students interpret and apply their STM experiences to life back home.

"Everyone knows . . . That short term missions benefit the people who come, not the people here."
Is that true? If so, then thousands of people are raising millions of dollars each year to do something not for others, but for themselves. Are we fooling ourselves by pretending these trips help people when they are really just an excuse to see a foreign country? If our good works are not doing good, why do them?

“Most STM trips violate basic principles of effective poverty-alleviation and have the potential to do considerable harm both to low-income people and to ourselves. However, by being cognizant of these principles and more intentional about our actions, the downsides of STMs can be reduced and there can be greater hope of long-term benefit for all involved.”
