Why Hold Synod?

Synod
denomination, meetings, service/serving, synod

One may wonder how a gathering of leaders conducting the business of the church advances the kingdom of God. After all, aren’t those who teach and preach...those who do the work...the ones who ultimately make a difference? Wouldn’t the church be better served if we just let those folks do what God has called them to do? Why have synods at all?

Synod's Agenda in the Brussels Airport

Synod
diversity, hope, opportunity/opportunities, synod, unity

I sat in the Brussels Airport with dozens of different nationalities and more languages. Soon we all boarded one plane, made in Europe, run by an Indian company, and headed to Toronto. Among us we are all able to communicate basically. If we had spent a long time together, we’d have to learn to live together deeply. That's what this year's diverse Agenda begs us to do ...

Adopting The Belhar: A Letter from the EIRC

Synod
church government, church order, confessions

There is near-unanimous agreement among the participants in the discussion (both pro and con) that the CRC should positively respond to the Belhar Confession in some way. The main point at issue is whether such a response should take the form of adopting it as a fourth “standard of faith” or whether some other form of affirmation can be designed.

Synod

For me it’s time to say farewell. For you who’ve read any of the posts about Synod 2011 it’s time to give The Network and the Board of Trustees some feedback. Was this blog helpful? Did it give you a broader understanding of what Synod 2011 would be addressing? Should the Board do something similar

Do the Practices of Synod Diminish its Deliberative Nature?

Synod
discussion, guidelines, participation, time management

Since 1997, when the denomination went to a one-week synod, a number of delegates have observed that there is simply not enough time to discuss the matters under consideration. The eye is always on the clock, and sometimes motions are made to restrict speeches to a certain number of minutes or to restrict discussion to a

Increasing Diversity - Bottom Up or Top Down?

Synod
church government, denomination, diversity, leadership

In one of my pre-synod blogs I asked, “Does the recommendation of the Board of Trustees about future hires of the CRC’s senior leadership ensure greater diversity or does it set us up for another failure? Now that synod has adopted that recommendation, the same question can be asked.

Ever since the “resignation” of our executive director, lots of questions have been raised. That’s fine. But lots of allegations have also been made.
