Living as Easter People

Though the celebration of Easter may be over the Easter season is not.  According to the liturgical calendar the Easter season extends to Pentecost.  Whether or not we consider ourselves a “liturgical” church or a church that highlights the Christian year there is wisdom in extending Easter beyond one day to give us time to further contemplate what the resurrection means to us today.

This coming Sunday might not include a brass ensemble, lilies, and a full worship team but it should not be any less of an Easter celebration. We need to be reminded of  the significance of the resurrection not just as a past event that has spiritual implications but as an event whose aftershocks continue to be felt today influencing how we as Christians see the world, live in it, and “do”.

Our task as worship leaders and planners is to be used by the Holy Spirit to help our congregants live as Easter people in a world of wars, disease, flooding, abuse, sickness, depression, and yes, hope. It’s been said “we are an Easter people living in a Good Friday world”.

As worship leaders and planners what are some ways you have extended Easter beyond the Sunday to help your congregants further reflect on the meaning of the resurrection?
