This past Sunday I switched with another leader in our Four's Worship Center. I realized by doing so, I would have to do the baptism story which I had never done before. In my church, La Grave CRC, we use Jerome Berryman's baptism story instead of Sonja Stewart's. As I started to prepare, I noticed that some of the parts of the liturgy didn't fit with our Reformed version so I took out my Psalter Hymnal and looked at our form for baptism. As I looked through it, I made some changes that fit better with the CRC approach as well as including the tradition we have at LaGrave of giving families a baptism candle.
This ended up being a really great experience for me. I was able to better internalize the story as I rewrote it and it made it more meaningful for me. I pray that it was for the children as well.
