On Sunday, while visiting the church of my youth, I had the chance to sit next to my uncle, who has recently been widowed.  He welcomed me with enthusiasm, acknowledging the loneliness that lurks when your partner is gone.  As the service began, I noticed how Uncle John sang with gusto the words of “Here I Am to Worship”.  Together, we sang a newer song that was only somewhat familiar to him.  His singing, however, did not lose its fervour. 

As the children were called forward to witness a baptism, he chuckled at the chaos, and made a comment about the blessing of the next generation.  At the close of the service, I commented on the moving message of the ‘senior’ pastor.  While in agreement, Uncle John was also quick to applaud the 2nd  pastor, the new guy, who did a great job teaching us about baptism.  He proceeded to the front of the sanctuary, to affirm and bless the young pastor. 

I reflected on a man, widowed and lonely at 76, yet joyful, and forward looking, taking the time to bless the next generation.  His worship is genuine, his words are encouraging and positive, his disposition is joyful and other-focused.

In the ministry of Coffee Break, perhaps we could be like Uncle John.   Imagine the implications, if we could encourage the next generation to be creative as they relate to the current culture.  Imagine how a young leader might flourish with your support and mentoring.  Imagine what we might learn from a new generation of leaders.
