Note: This discussion thread has taken on a life of its own. If you don't want to read dozens of posts, here's a handy summary of how it's all gone down:

  • We asked people to just say "hi" and offered a mug as a prize (see below).
  • Lots of people responded!
  • Rebecca L won and we threw down a challenge to her church (read post).
  • Controversy was 'brewing' and we responded (read post).
  • The Board of Trustees president responded (read post).
  • Crossroads CRC met our challenge and got another mug.
  • We issued a new challenge to all churches (read post).
  • Rebecca L claimed that the mug was broken when it arrived (see photo and post).
  • Crossroads CRC is still in the lead (see their "My Church" listing).
  • Crossroads CRC won (read post).
  • Check your own "My Church" listing and Spread the Word in your own church.

Now here's the original post...

Today is the day.

Yup, it's time. Time to post your first comment on The Network.

We're making it easy for you - all you've gotta do is say 'Hello". Tell you what...you can even just say "Hi". We'll take either.

You see, websites like this are best when everyone participates. But sometimes taking that first step is daunting. I know, and there's plenty of sites where I don't comment either. I like what I get from the site, I just haven't had the need, or the confidence, or the time to give back and participate.

So that's why we're making this super-duper easy. Just:

  1. Login (or register).
  2. Add your comment here (e.g. "Hello", "Hi", etc).
  3. Feel awesome.

BONUS: we're giving away a prize!sweet mug

From all the comments in reply to this post, we'll randomly select one lucky providentially-blessed person to get...drumroll...an official Network mug! These limited-edition mugs are not available in stores or on eBay. The only people that have received them are the Network Guides...and soon, if you are chosen, you!

But first you need to say "Hello". Please follow those 3 little steps above.

Thank you.

P.S. After you've said 'Hello", tell your friends to do the same. Sure, it'll reduce your chances of winning that fantastic mug, but that selfless act is for the greater good. Here's how you can spread the word about The Network.

Hello ~ I love the variety of topics, resources and oportunities to connect on 'The Network'.. There's really no excuse to not be 'connected'! thanks for all the hard work and visioning to make this happen!

Hello, Sweet prize! Wow, winning without gambling, what could be more CRC than that!
Hello!!! Is this a beginning of a new trend?
Hey. This looks like a great resource. I'll be looking in here later. Bye.

Saying hello... enjoying reading the blogs and posts on The Network
Heyyo. Looking forward to the resource, but really wanting that mug!

Hello! Looking forward to the discussions on here
Hello -

Hello.

I already have a Network mug (and it's become my mug of choice at home), but I still wanted to "feel awesome." It's been a while.

Hi .... like what you are doing.... enjoy the day
Hi, I think I did this correctly and you can never have too many mugs (at least I don't think so).

You sure did. Welcome aboard! Another little tip...click "My Church" (upper left on any page) to specify your church and then see who else from your congregation is using this Network site.

A free mug? Very clever! Stan PS: Hi!

Hello from Brooks CRC
Hi! I always enjoy getting a new mug!

Hello world.

Just snapped a pic of that amazing mug - view it at the top of this page. Oooh. Aaaah. We'll give people another week or so to say 'hi'. Then draw a name to see who gets it. I think the eventual recipient will need to post a review of its awesomeness. That is one good-lookin' mug.
Hi and Hello to the Network. This is very worthwhile, and should be promoted more in the churches. My current church is Fellowship CRC in St Thomas, ON (www.fellowship-church.ca). Nice mug Tim, it will look good at coffee time after church (or before if we go to two services).
Hey - good work here! Love from Calvin College!

Howdy. Providence. Funny. I better get that mug now. :D Blessings from Calvin.
Hello: Great site, and should be promoted more in the churches.

Hello Tim, nice mug :) Cheers, Luker
Hi Tim, Just looking at the mug makes me thirsty! Keep up the good work! Henry

Hi Tim, Very much liking the concept and the implementation. Paul
It takes the chance of a free mug to bring me out of hiding. I'm enjoying the site - I'm surprised more people don't know about all the resources here.
Thanks, Tim, for the suggestion to click on "My Church". It took me awhile to get the computer to recognize what the name of my church was on here since I started out much to specific -- Faith Christian Reformed Church in Elmhurst, IL -- then tried -- Faith Christian Reformed Church -- even tried plugging in our website instead of a church name -- www.faithelmhurst.org -- and finally decided to try -- Faith CRC -- It finally worked. Sadly there's not to many registered from my church -- they're missing out! By the way, Hello again and I really like the picture of the mug -- looks great to use for my morning cup of coffee! :)
Hello. I reeaaalllllly need a mug. Like really!!
This will be one of the few times I comment but I do enjoy reading them.
It is very wonderful. The power of God is makes us meet or share in a such wonderful site.I have been servant of God for some years traveling and tarmacking through remote and urban regions to spread the word of, in places where Christianity has not taken roots. So i have decided to work with an affiliate of any domination after the missions of our mighty. Hi all - I just got registered, although have been following the Deacon postings for some time.

I've already posted a few times; but I'll say hello here if it means I have a shot at that mug.

Oh, I feel so awesome. Actually, I've been enjoying the helpful articles and resources here on Network, I think it has great potential for helping churches across the country with ideas and encouragement in their ministry. Technically, this is not my first post, but I really want that mug!!

Thank you for the great articles! I love to read the comments from churches across North America - a great way to connect us.
Hello, I like the posts, I find them very informative. Nathan
Good morning.
Hello - Papa John here. I'm a grandfather who is serving as an elder for the first time in New Life Fellowship Church Red Deer, Albrta. The network looks like a great place to get your feet wet and try and get up to speed with the elder activities. thanks for all the information. God Bless

Invoking random number generator...and the winner is...

Congratulations, you are now the owner of that Network mug. We can't imagine a more worthy recipient. 4 posts on The Network? Nice.

Use it proudly for after-church coffee and maybe that will kick some of your fellow church members into gear and using The Network. Yeah, I'm talkin' to you Crossroads CRC in San Marcos, CA! You who left Rebecca all alone in her "My Church" listing. It brings a tear to the eye.

Tell you what...if Rebecca's "My Church" count gets up to 10 people within 2 weeks we'll send you a second Network mug for the whole church to share from week to week. If that's not major incentive to sign up, I don't know what is.

Either way, Rebecca, you're getting your very own Network mug. Use it well. Maybe send us a picture of it in its new home.

Now if we can just get it shipped to you in one piece. Time to find some bubble wrap...

Good morning from New York. Going to be a great day.
This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it.
A beautiful morning here in West Michigan, and looking forward to a weekend of relaxation and remembrance.
tim's picture
There's a scandal 'brewing' about that coffee mug...and I must respond. It turns out that Rebecca L attends the church where the CRC Board of Trustees president - Mark Vermaire - is pastor. But wait...it gets even more scandalous. He's also the former pastor at my church. Let me just say that I know how bad this looks. And that it's a little gift to conspiracy theorists everywhere. But I assure you...our coffee mug contest was not rigged. We've verified that Rebecca L is not a fictitious account. And we assure you that the selection of reply #33 was, in fact, randomly selected (courtesy www.random.org). Plus, there's the obvious fact that the CRC's BOT president is in such a powerful position that he can get any coffee mug in the CRC he wants. No rigging required. So you can put the pen down...no need to write that overture for a Synodical investigation. Our Network mug contest was totally legit.
The Network "mug" winner: Rebecca WHO?? A member of CROSSROADS here in San MARCOS?? And, Tim, when I was your pastor, didn't we hear a word against "bearing false witness"?? and probably also against "manipulating systems"??! The answer to all of the above is joyfully "YES!," and you have obviously responded to that word well (at least in the mug controversy! :-). I'll confirm the truth of your statements here in writing, and I'll joyfully look forward to seeing Rebecca's mug as she takes it to Crossroads in her new calling as deacon! (And learns from the gifts of the Network how to do that calling well.) (Now, Tim, did you mention sending me a free mug if I crafted a note to this effect?)
Yay for Rebecca's winning the mug! I admit that I should have officially joined the Network sooner--since she encouraged me to do so soon after the Worship Symposium. (By the way, you picked the right person to take home that mug! She will use it with great joy. :-)
Rebecca Ligtenberg's picture
Wow 2 of 10... and we're just getting warmed up! Come on, Crossroads, let's make a statement!
Rebecca Ligtenberg's picture
Correction, when I click "My Church" there are now 5 others listed! Halfway! Can we earn the mug by the end of the day??
When someone purely pencil and paper tries four times before succeeding in opening an account, you know that mug must be something special :-)
This is new territory for me, but I'm in!
Congrats Rebecca! I look forward to seeing the new mug.
Congrats to Rebecca L. for winning. Hmm... Since I have a sister and brother-in-law who attends the church that Rebecca attends and Mark Vermaire is minister at, and also, a sister that used to attend the church that Mark Vermaire was a minister at when he was in GR, (and I guess I could continue to play "Dutch Bingo" but will stop), does that warrant me also winning a mug since I won't be one of the 10 "to share" the mug that will possibly be won yet since I live no where near there and attend a different CRC? (just figured I may as well try.....) Seriously, it's been fun trying to join in the fun of winning a mug and in the process investigating this website.
I've never been part of a conspiracy before....but if it is worth a mug, I'm in!!! Congratulations, Rebecca!!!

CrossroadsCRC Office joined last week, but didn't have a chance to post a comment. :) What's the latest on the coffee mug situation? We are getting ready over here for our coffee time at 10:00am Tuesday-Friday and would love to see a new MUG joining us soon. Hello, good morning and make a great day!
Hi Tim, That is one classy mug. Yes, I'm too late to win but would definitely buy it. Great incentive. Congratulations, yes it sounds like it was a conspiracy.
I'm in...go Crossroads!
I'm in...go Crossroads!
Rebecca Ligtenberg's picture
Update: Crossroad has at least 10 new members on the Network as of today, so we would love it if you would send out that second mug. Thanks everyone!!
tim's picture

Well that didn't take long! 4 days? Over a long weekend? Now I wish I would have asked for 25.

Crossroads CRC - you rock! And I've since learned that fast/cheap internet access is difficult to come by in your particular area, making your feat all the more impressive!

We hope to deliver your second mug IN PERSON to your pastor at next week's Synod. That way we can dodge all responsibility for delivering it to California in one piece. Plus we can snap a photo of him with the prize. Maybe we can get it printed in The Banner (yeah, DeMoor, I'm talking to you!).

Seeing how quickly your "My Church" listing jumped from one person to 12 has got me thinking... are there any other churches up to a challenge?

Click the "My Church" link at the top of any Network page to see how your own church stacks up to Crossroads CRC's 12 people.

Tell you what...we'll give one more super-awesome Network mug to the church with the most people in their "My Church" listing by the time Synod begins on June 12. Think about how fantastic it would look in your council room. Or shining like a beacon amidst all the plain-'ol mugs during after-church coffee. Here are some tips for how you can spread the word.

So now everyone can play. Which church will take the prize mug on the opening day of Synod?

Game on!

I've read about this site in the Church Newsletter email and after reading about the mug controversy, I had to stop by and read the entries. I think this site has a lot of potential. Thanks for coming up with the idea.
OK, I have my first question. I tried to fill out a profile, but the name of my church is not recognized when I try to save the information. Historically we are 'The Christian Reformed Church of Platte'. That was not recognized, nor was Platte Christian Reformed Church or Platte CR Church. I assure you that we do exist out here on the South Dakota prairies.
tim's picture
Just type in "Platte" and wait a second, it should pop right up. We've got you in the list as "Platte CRC in Platte, SD". If you have further trouble, just email me (using the icon below my name) and I'll add it for you. An update for everyone....Crossroads CRC is still in the lead with 12 members signed up. Others chasing are Grace and Ivanrest (Grand Rapids), Bethel (Lacombe), Inglewood (Edmonton), Cragmore (CO Springs), Shalom (Sioux Falls), Bethel (Dunnville), and more. Who will it be? C'mon, someone's gotta beat Crossroads CRC. If they win yet another mug it'll start going to their heads. Fire up the email list. Rally the troops. Get signed up and your church could win the Grand Prize (a.k.a. 'the mug') announced on Synod's opening day!
Hi! Another from Crossroads!
Hi! Hello from Crossroads San Marcos!
I missed the mug competition, but am saying Hi. Maybe next time.
Another from Crossrads CRC!
I'm a member at Crossroads in San Marcos and I know Rebecca L is a two- fisted coffee drinker and needs that second mug...so I signed up.
tim's picture

Whoops. We forgot to tell Rebecca L that the mug is the glue-it-yourself puzzle type. Check out this photo she sent us after the package arrived:

Fortunately, we also have the normal, all-in-one-piece variety here in the office. I could have sworn that was the type we put in that box and mailed, but I guess not. Or she's just gaming the system to get two mugs.

A quick update on our latest contest...

Rebecca's church - Crossroads CRC in San Marco, CA - must be having fun with this whole thing because their "My Church" count is now at 24 members!

What's your "My Church" count? Click the link at the top of any page to find out.

There's still time to beat Crossroads CRC, but you'll need to act fast. Send an email out to your church, asking people to sign up on The Network. As we mentioned before, the church with the highest "My Church" count on Synod's opening day wins a mug (intact or puzzle type - your choice)!

That's Saturday, so hurry and send out that email. A "My Church" count of 24 is good, but it's beatable. With one, well-crafted email to your congregation you could take bragging rights away from Crossroads CRC. Who's going to give it a shot?

Even if you don't win the mug, you'll be helping to spread the word about The Network and connecting churches in new ways for ministry!

tim's picture

Thanks to everyone who's participated in this thread. A news story has been posted about it all. Here's the link:

Network Mugs Come to Synod

Saturday is the end of our latest mug challenge. Then the fun's over and we get all serious-like for Synod.

Unless anyone has ideas for an encore challenge? Hmmmm. We do have a few more mugs...

I have a challenge for a mug (or pieces thereof): How many times will the Network be mentioned in the official proceedings record of Synod? My guess: 23.
Rick Vanderwal's picture
Hello, Group - from Bethel CRC in DeMotte, IN i'm new to NETWORK, but looking forward to gleaning all kinds of information, wisdom, and, um... networking with you all! Any mugs left????? either way, I suppose that the community connection is the true prize!
Rick Vanderwal's picture
wow, am I late in the conversation! :-)
tim's picture
It's opening day of Synod and we have ourselves a winner. The church with the biggest "My Church" listing is... Crossroads CRC in San Marco, CA with 25 members (as of this moment) Congratulations - you did it again. This church is amazing and they come away with another fine mug. I'll be personally delivering it to your pastor at Synod and then we can all see if he gets it home in one piece. Admittedly, it's an awesome mug. But, as Rick pointed out, the 'community connection is the true prize'. Thanks to everyone for playing along. With 70 posts and nearly 2,000 reads, you've all helped create some fun publicity for The Network. Please keep spreading the word about the Network in your church and beyond. We'd hope to create a "Top 10" list so we can all see which churches have the most people on The Network. Stay tuned for that. And yes, we'll probably be giving away more mugs in the future. So check your "My Church" listing now...and keep it growing!
tim's picture

We've got another mug winner...and a new challenge to unseat Crossroads CRC as the church with the most Network members.

Check out this new post with all the details and stop by Linda's profile to wish her congratulations. She also happens to be a brand new member of her local CRC - double-reason to stop by and say congrats!
