Hi

I need to give a Safe Church Seminar at my church and previously they have shown the Faith trust Institute videos of Bless our Children and Hear their Cries. The problem is that most people have now seen them and I would like to bring something new. Is there any other videos that could be recommended?

Thank you

Hello Heather,

It is a challenge to find current and interesting information to present at training.  Something to think about is a video that may seem off-topic, but it might have some very relevant insights.  For example, a video on bullying or a video on sexual harassment or a video on discipline could on the one hand seem to be a narrow focus, but could on the other hand provide some insights that people could use in the church setting and at home, too.

Local libraries often have a stock of these general videos.  A good discipline video is "1-2-3 Magic".  The video "Hurting or Flirting" addresses teens and sexual harassment.  "It's a Girl's World" is a video produced in Canada about bullying.  Also check the catalog of the Mennonite Central Committee.  They have produced some terrific videos and I recall one or two on the subject of abuse.

The website, Church Law & Tax Report, has one video, Reducing the Risk, which is well done and focuses on the benefits of a sound safety policy.

To increase the input on your timely topic, I've invited the Safe Church Team Chairpersons to respond to your forum question with ideas of their own.  I will ask them to respond on the blog section of this site so that more folks will see all the possibilities.

And thanks, too, Heather for making education such a high priority in your church.

Greetings,

I thought I responded to this a while ago; but don't see my reply so I'll try again (I'm not the most technically saavy person). I live in MI where there is this great resource center that works like a library; anyone can check things out and they can send the resources anywhere in the state. It's housed at the MI Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence and is not a faith based organization; but they have many faith based resources. (http://www.resourcecenter.info/ ) They have many good resources produced by the Faith Trust Institute as well as others. If you find something from there that you'd like to try; I could get it and send it to you. Another good website that is more about family violence and how the church can respond is www.theraveproject.org. They have some videos and other materials that can be used in educational settings. Everytime I've asked for permission to use their materials they've said, "of course!" There are other materials out there that can be found with a little searching (http://www.christiananswers.net/q-eden/childsexualabuse.html  You will have to determine what will be best for your own church context. I'm so glad that you are holding seminars and working to educate your congregation. May the Lord bless your work. I'm
