I like the fact that all members, not only a select few are asked to participate in the worship service here at Wheaton CRC. It also is not clickish! A place where any one can feel comfortable, newcomers are welcomed and invited to feel at home. A lot of us are fellowshipping together on FB. A true family.
It's the people that God has sent to Bethel. The comment came last Sunday from a new attender that we are like "extended family." The people of Bethel live out the Gospel in care for one another in so very many ways!
My local congregation has been home for 44 years. It's where I've heard faithful preaching, learned to serve on council, made friends, and expressed my commitment to urban ministry and racial reconciliation. It's a place of fellowship, of high tolerance for unusual behavior, and perhaps most importantly it's a place that's become family. I can serve there, I can be held accountable there, I can cry there....
The people - flawed, confused, sometimes despairing, hurting, but loving God and one another, and convinced that God is sovereigh, gracious and merciful. We are learning how to be a community of believers - we've a long way to go but we're on the road together.
