What do the ten commandments teach us about abortion?

The Law of God and Abortion.

And God spoke all these words:

I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.

The same God who delivered the Jews from slavery, also delivered us from slavery of sin. Including the sin of abortion. It is a great sin against Almighty God to ignore His deliverance and fall back into the sin of the un-regenerated  state  before rebirth.

The first commandment.

You shall have no other gods before me.

Taking the life of an unborn baby is doing what rightly belongs to God. The unborn baby is created in the image of God and killing the baby is putting us in God’s place.

The second commandment

You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.

It is not only the image of wood and stone we may not worship. But we may not create in our minds idea’s opposing the teaching of God’s word and worshipping self made philosophies. Any philosophy that denies that men are created in God’s image, would by that teaching open the door  to all types of false teaching, including the right to abort children for any reason.

The third commandment.

You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.

Those, who argue that they have asked God to interfere or to provide a special sign, telling them that they should not abort their unborn child. When they do not see lightning strike down from Heaven or another miraculous sign. They use this as an answer from God, telling them that it is God who directs them to abort. This is a false argument and a self serving approach, using God’s name in vain.*

The fourth commandment.

Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

The second part of the Heidelberg Catechism states; “ Second, that all the days of my life I rest from my evil works, let the Lord work in me by His Holy Spirit, and thus begin in this life the eternal Sabbath. Abortion on demand falls under the “evil works.”

The fifth commandment.

Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you

Killing the unborn child does great harm to the mother as well to the father. It is a devilish attack on the God given instinct to protect ones offspring .

The sixth commandment.

“You shall not murder.

Aborting unborn children is nothing less than murder and is forbidden by this commandment.

The seventh commandment.

You shall not commit adultery.

The answer of question 109 in the Heidelberg catechism reads as follows;’ since our body and soul are  both temple of the Holy Spirit, it is His will that we keep both pure and holy; wherefore he forbids all unchaste actions, gestures, words, thoughts, desires, and whatever may entice us thereto.

There nothing pure , holy or chaste when we allow our unborn babies to be aborted.

The eight commandment.

You shall not steal.

Taking the life of an unborn baby is stealing his or her life, for no other reason than greed and selfishness.

The ninth commandment.

You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

All those who claim that the unborn is nothing but a blob of tissue, are telling if not the biggest, surely one of the biggest lies ever told.

The tenth commandment.

“You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”

The abortion industry is driven by greed and the love of money by the abortionists. And by the greed of many who want all the excitement of sexual entertainment, but will not be responsible for the consequences.

The above statements are surely not meant as a complete summary of what the Ten Commandments are teaching. It is only meant as a picture how every commandment has often  a broader teaching than at first glance recognized. It also seems to the writer that the abortion on demand is based on a world and life view totally foreign to what the scripture is teaching.

  • The sidewalk counselors did report that this argument was used by a couple who came to the abortion clinic last year. The side walk counselors told the couple that God had placed them at this place at this time to tell the couple that God does not want them to have the abortion. They did listen and turn around. As far as the sidewalk counselors know they did not have an abortion.

Interesting. Bert, what do you think this would look like for war? Or for environmental damage? Or poverty?

Well said, Bert.  It reminds us of how all the commandments are so closely connected.

Marie, I would suggest that you try this for war, environmental damage, and poverty and see what happens.  I could think of a couple of differences, however, depending on motive, knowledge, and responsibility.   For example, war might be defensive to protect the innocent;  how would that compare to agressive war to indulge imperialism?  Or environmental damage from ignorance or to save lives, vs deliberate destruction with no purpose?   Or poverty caused by others, vs poverty caused by sloth and sluggardly behaviour (as Proverbs mentions).  Abortion is an action;  war is an action;  poverty is a result of actions; environmental damage is a result of actions.  Hard to compare exactly.
