About Me

Resident of Winnipeg MB since 1956 though born in Prince Albert Saskatchewan in 1945. I'm a life-long bachelor. Dad was with CN Rail which in terms of transferring its employees hither and yon, was much like the military. Prince Albert SK>Winnipeg MB>Dauphin MB>Regina SK>Winnipeg! Phew! Guess that's why I'm still in the first house I bought in 1976. Enough moving already.

I was raised in the United Church of Canada and prefer Augustine United in Osborne Village to the family church, Westworth in River Heights where I live.

I had a 4-year flirtation with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints but in the end, did not convert. I have never been in the company of any group whose members are so universally upbeat and happy, and who reach out warmly when they see a new face at the meeting house. As a single DOC - Dreaded Only Child - I had no immediate family offering a place to go for holday meals but when I was involved with the Mormons, I ALWAYS had a place to go on important holidays. These folks exude love and acceptance from every pore. I felt a warmth in their company. Several of the American missionaries  remain friends to this day, some 7 years after I ceased my affiliation. One thing that intrigued me was the fact that they have a living scripture. The Book of Mormon is, of course, the foundation of the faith and is fixed but what they call 'quads' include the Holy Bible as well as the Book of Mormon, Doctrine & Covenants, and The Pearl of Great Price. The D & C is what lives and the most recent additions were added in 1978 (!) with others in the late 1800s. Sadly, I was the old dog who wouldn't learn new tricks and I remain a coffee addict who, as mentioned earlier, likes the odd beer on the patio! That, of course, doesn't wash in the CJCLDS.

Interests

Where do I start? When I use the term 'collector' to describe myself, some ask when I'm auditioning for 'Hoarders'! C'mon...my 'stuff' might come in handy some day. I don't accumulate trash and garbage, but oh how the paper stacks up...you know, magazines I hope to read 'some day', books I'll DEFINITELY read as soon as I retire, all those notes I write myself because my memory is poor.

Seriously, I do collect things like rocks, preserved insects, books, CDs, DVDs, bank vault memorabilia like older timelocks and combination locks, nests of tellers' lock-ups and safety deposit boxes, bolt retractor handles and wheels....Not surprisingly, I also collect safes and have about a dozen. The flagship of the fleet, so to speak, weighs 3 tons. It's a banker's safe from the era of WW1 when vaults provided fire protection and the real security was provided by the safe inside the vault. The outer door ofg my safe weighs 1500 lbs and has a timelock and two combination locks. There are two inner compartments each with two combination locks. Given when it was made, it has old-school craftsmanship, with much nickel-plated hardware and ornate filligree work on the inside of the door. Mechanically inclined guys drool when they see the door. Can you tell I never married?

I love swimming and hitting the pool 3 times a week is also a social thing. Getting 'people fixes' is important to us extroverts! I don't care for sports otherwise - participatory or spectator - and can't remember if the Superbowl is for hockey or football!

Fussing with my yard in summer is fun and once it's up and running, it's great to sit out on my patio and enjoy the view...and drink the odd beer, too.

I never had aspirations to be a physician but I studied medicine from professional texts since my 20s to provide additional stimulation beyond what my career offered. I still keep up with that in certain areas of interest.
