The Intergenerational ChurchPosted: 05/07/13During the past generation, youth ministry has received a great deal of attention in the North American church. Ironically, as this ministry matures, leaders are recognizing more and more that the Scriptures do not encourage age-segregated ministry, but rather describe four-generation communities that grow in faith together. Age-segregated ministry has more to do with cultural influences than Scriptural foundations. Might there be a connection between the young adult exodus from the church and a lack of biblical foundations for ministry? This webinar will build on intergenerational biblical foundations and provide a wide variety of ideas and resources for strengthening the interaction between the generations in our congregations. Our presenter: Dr. Syd Hielema serves as chaplain and professor of youth ministry at Redeemer University College in Ancaster, ON. He is also a member of the CRC Faith Formation Committee, and director of that committee's Congregational Faith Formation Project. He handles the faith formation questions on the Banner's Q and A page, and has been involved in congregational ministry that focuses on children and teens for more than forty years. The passion that animates him is a vision of congregations in which God's children of all ages bless each other to be a blessing in their local communities. |

When Jesus is Lord: From Confession to OrganizationPosted: 06/13/13Moving from vision to lifestyle is a challenge for every church and person. How does what we believe get translated into the way we live together as a community? How do we encourage those who worship to live every day of their lives? Many times the desire to live faithfully is defeated by the habits we have unconsciously embraced. This webinar will explore the way habits have power over the church organization and suggest some key habits that are faithful to our tradition and transformative to the church culture. Our presenter: Neil de Koning is pastor at Woody Nook CRC in Lacombe, AB. Previously, he's served churches in Calgary and Sarnia. Convinced that the role of the elder is vital to the spiritual and organizational health of a congregation, he has written a book (Guiding the Faith Journey) and served as the first Guide for the Elder’s Network. |

New Elders: Key Understanding and PracticesPosted: 06/13/13When we are called to serve as an elder, we enter a new way of experiencing church. The responsibilities of church leadership and guiding the faith life of individuals and families require new focus and reflection. How do I exercise my leadership function? When does oversight become overbearing? For which key dangers should I be alert? What do I need to learn to better fulfill my calling? In this webinar we'll introduce the basics of how to discern vision and organizational identity, when the church becomes dysfunctional and how go grow our capacity as leaders and nurture our spiritual life. |

Navigating the Challenges of Church RenewalPosted: 06/03/13The journey of congregational renewal can be called the “Journey of 3 Lands and 2 Rivers” because, like the ancient journey of the Hebrews, there are river crossings and rebellions, celebrations and ceremonies, mountains and wilderness. What does this all look like at the congregational level, and what should leaders, including pastors, expect? Join us for this presentation by Jack Tacoma who has coached dozens of these journeys and is continually drawn back to the vibrant lessons learned in the Exodus. Our presenter: Jack Tacoma is a Ministry Specialist with Home Missions in Eastern Canada and a member of the Regional Resource Team. Jack's work involves coaching churches toward renewal. |

Today's Lepers in Your ChurchPosted: 06/10/13How should the church respond to those with a criminal sexual history? People shouldn’t be defined by the worst things done in their lives, nor cast out and shunned like the lepers of old. Two truths must be held in tension: Churches must maintain a safe, welcoming, and nurturing environment; and churches are called to exemplify God’s grace. This webinar explores how churches can navigate between these truths so that the church becomes a safe and healing community, a station of hope for those who are repentant and seek the Lord's help to make better choices and walk in righteousness. Our presenter: Bonnie Nicholas is Director of Safe Church Ministry for the CRCNA. She's served on Domestic and Sexual Violence Coordinating Councils in both Ingham and Eaton Counties in Michigan and has facilitated many support groups for women who've suffered the devastating effects of abuse. Carol Rienstra is Chair of the Micah Center Beyond Prisoners Advocacy Group and Coordinator of Prisoners in Christ Committee at Church of the Servant in Grand Rapids, MI. Carol’s son is currently in prison for mistakes made in his youth unrelated to sexual misconduct. |

Better TogetherPosted: 06/10/13Clusters are one way Christian Reformed Home Missions is using to start and strengthen churches in North America. Church leaders are gathering to strengthen leaders, be formed spiritually, multiply new leaders and churches, and strengthening existing churches. In this webinar you will learn how you can grow a cluster in your own region of the country that changes churches and challenges churches and leaders to be on God’s mission. We'll discuss the seven core characteristics of a cluster, planning cluster gatherings, staying on mission, and bringing churches together to form a cluster. Our presenter: Larry Doornbos is an experienced pastor and church planter. He began his ministry in Rehoboth, NM working to build a church that emphasized community outreach. In 1993, Larry, along with a core group of seven families, began EverGreen Ministries in Hudsonville, Michigan. EverGreen focuses on making passionate followers of Jesus who are deeply engaged in their communities and the world. In 2013, Larry joined the Christian Reformed Home Missions Team as Church Planting Leader. In this work he is privileged to work with many partners to spread God’s name and renown through starting and strengthening churches. |

On Mission with the RCAPosted: 06/10/13During the past 24 months the CRC and RCA have joined together in mission through the Church Multiplication Initiative. Through a generous grant we have worked to establish Hispanic Training Centers, begin new ministries, and start new CRC and RCA churches. As we continue this joint work in mission there’s an opportunity for Classes from the RCA and CRC to come together. This webinar will explore what it means to collaborate with a RCA classis, what other projects have been successfully carried out in this joint mission and how a classis can receive a grant for a joint project. Show Me the Money!Posted: 06/10/13If you’ve ever wondered - “are offerings to American charities allowed?” or “can we leave behind a financial gift to our host community in Mexico?” - then this webinar is for you! Discover how compliance with Canadian charitable giving regulations changes your church’s funding of missionaries, short term teams and missions activities overseas. Understanding terms like “registered charity” and “charitable work” makes all the difference in deciding whether or not your church should receive a donation or issue a tax receipt. We’ll discuss how to demonstrate “supervision, direction and control” in your church’s missions activities, and what qualifies as charitable work for short term teams. Real life scenarios will be discussed. Our presenter: Trish De Jong has been on staff with CRWM since 1996. Her current role as Missions Engagement Developer involves a part of ministry she is most passionate about – seeing churches becoming more active, involved and intentional about global ministry. While she provides resources, consultations and training to local church leaders, she also assists new missionaries in cultivating healthy support networks. |

How to Do the Work of an ElderWhere do you start, what do you do, and how do you provide care and feeding for the body of Christ? How do we do our best for the churches that God has given us charge over? This webinar is designed to help elders do the tasks described in the forms for officebearers (and many of the principles also apply to deacons as well). Pastors who want to maximize their ministry through the care and feeding of the local congregation can use these principles in their own council devotion/team building. Our presenter: Paul Hansen is the Pastor of First CRC in Artesia, CA and recently presented on this topic at the Dordt Day of Encouragement. He's been a pastor in both the RCA and CRC for over 30 years. He is a survivor of numerous Councils in both denominations and has served in both Pacific NW and Heartland Classes. Most of the ideas he shares about serving as an elder were developed by one of the best Pastors in his experience, Karl Overbeek (retired RCA) who wrote a study guide about it. The other great practitioner of Pastoral ministry from whom he learned a great deal is Pastor Barry Blankers (retired CRC). |

Hemorrhaging Faith: Reflecting on Why Young Adults Leave the ChurchThis webinar introduces some of the sobering statistics about youth staying, leaving and returning to church in Canada. It asks questions about why these trends are happening and what can be done to inspire our youth to carry on the tradition of serving Jesus Christ through the church and into his world. It is suggested that Canadian society no longer supports the discipleship of young men and women and thus parents and congregations need to be more intentional about raising youth to be agents of renewal in God's kingdom. For more information visit Hemorrhaging Faith Our presenter: Peter Schuurman is an instructor in the Youth Ministry Certification Program at Redeemer University College and a former CRC campus minister. Currently he is working on a PhD in Religious Studies at the University of Waterloo and is a contributing editor for The Christian Courier. He is on the preaching team at New Life CRC in Guelph, where he lives with his wife, Joy and three little children. |

Elder Visits in the 21st CenturyIn this webinar we’ll look at re-creating elder visits with every type of household represented in our congregations, from the ground up in the 21st Century. We will focus on how to use the visit to discover, encourage, and gently blow on the spark of faith in their lives so that they are encouraged and sense that Jesus has come close to them. We will accomplish this by exploring very practical “how to” steps for the visit. All aspects of the visit: pre-visit, during the visit, post visit, along with potential problems, will be discussed. Our presenter: Pastor Bill Van Der Heide is a graduate of Calvin College and Calvin Theological Seminary. Since being ordained in 1980 in Hawarden, IA he’s served congregations in Iowa, Michigan, and Montana and is currently the pastor of Ocheyedan Christian Reformed Church in Ocheyedan, Iowa. Welcoming the StrangerThe church lives between the borders of Christ’s first coming and his promised return. National borders and immigration laws are also a part of the context in which the church finds itself. In this “in-between” place, the CRC is called to demonstrate profound and welcoming love to those who seek to join our communities. So how do we do it? This webinar will cover these three topics to help churches to image God’s love in them and “welcome the stranger:”

When Helping Hurts has been paradigm-shifting for many churches; however, we’ve also heard the response, “Now what? How can we help without hurting? We are afraid to do anything!” This workshop will briefly review the concepts from When Helping Hurts and dive right in to the 5 principles for helping without hurting, which are included in the new edition of the book. We’ll also share tools and resources for putting the principles into action in both local and global contexts. Atonement ConfusionOne of the reasons that evangelism is often more privileged than 'community development' or 'seeking justice' in terms of the church's understanding of its mission has to do with our understanding of what happened at the cross. When we think of Jesus' death on the cross and what he accomplished there as somehow distinct from and unrelated to his Kingdom proclamation and actions, we get stuck. This webinar will discuss this issue and suggest that a more comprehensive view of the atonement can lead to a more comprehensive mission for the church - something we desperately need in our day and age. Our presenter: Roy Berkenbosch is Director of the Micah Centre and Interdisciplinary Studies at The King’s University College in Edmonton, Alberta. He has worked in Bangladesh with CRWRC and is currently Pastoral Advisor to the CRWRC Board. He also serves on the steering committee of Micah Challenge Canada and Canadian Peacemakers International. |

Now there's a way volunteer and staff ministry leaders can connect with each other to compare notes, encourage each other, and talk about the nuts and bolts of various church ministries. The Network is built on the idea that often the best help comes from people who are doing similar work and have struggled with similar questions. Before the Webinar
What equipment will I need?
You just need a basic computer with speakers or headphones. During the presentation, audio will come through your speakers/headphones and the visuals will appear on your screen.
Will my computer work?
Our webinar provider, WebEx, offers a test meeting you can join to make sure your system is ready to go. If prompted, download the WebEx client (a small tool that allows you to view the webinar). Once you see the “Congratulations” slide you’ll know that your system is ready for the real webinar. Enter the test meeting now. If you have any difficulty (especially if you are using Mac OS 10.5), see the troubleshooting tips below.
How do I register?
Visit www.crcna.org/webinars and click the link of the webinar you’d like to attend. On the next page, find the “Register” button near the bottom of the page. Fill in your name and other required information and click “Submit”.
Once registered, you’ll receive an email that contains the link you’ll need to click to join the webinar. That link is very important, so be sure to keep this email for the day of the webinar.
Why aren't these webinars held in the evening?
Keep in mind that attendees are spread across 3 (or more) time zones, so a 7pm start time for the west coast is 10pm in the east. Furthermore, some people have more flexibility during the day than they have in the evenings. In the end, there's no perfect time that will work for everyone. That's why we record all sessions and post the archive shortly after the live event (usually the video is posted the same day).
Joining the Webinar
How do I join the webinar?
On the day of the webinar, find your registration email. Shortly before the webinar is to begin, click the link in that registration email to join the webinar. Make sure your speakers/headphones are on and wait for the webinar to start.
Troubleshooting
Can’t Join
- Try this System Check Tool.
- If prompted, accept the download of the WebEx client (depending on your browser and pop-up settings, a prompt may appear as a small yellow bar across the top of the web page).
- If your browser is using outdated Java or Flash plugins, you may also be prompted to update those. If you are using FireFox v.10, you'll need to upgrade to the current version to avoid an error message when downloading the WebEx client.
- If you are using Mac OS 10.5 please follow the workaround from the link https://kb.webex.com/WBX71671 to join the webinar.
Can’t Hear Audio
- Check that your speakers are turned on or that your headphones are plugged into the correct jack.
- Check that your computer volume isn’t muted.
- Turn up your computer volume.
-

Adjust volume on the WebEx Audio Broadcast Panel (see image).
- If you accidentally closed that panel, you can re-open it from the top menu item: Communicate > Join Audio Broadcast
Can’t See Presentation
- If you have several applications open, make sure the WebEx application is on top. Close or minimize unnecessary applications.
During the Webinar
What’s on my webinar screen?
During the webinar, you’ll be viewing the “Event Window” (see image). The Event Window has it’s own set up menus at the top and the main portion of the screen is divided into two parts:
- left side - content such as slides, videos, etc
- right sidebar - separate panels for Q&A, chat, polls, and more
How to I adjust volume?
Simply adjust the volume of your computer and/or speakers. You can also adjust volume on the WebEx Audio Broadcast Panel (see image). If you accidentally closed that panel, you can re-open it from the top menu item: Communicate > Join Audio Broadcast
What is Q&A, and how do I use it?
Use the Q&A tool to send questions - at any time! - to the presenter. The host will compile those questions and, during or after the presentation, pose them to the presenter. Or, in some cases, your question may be answered in writing by another staffer.
If attendance is high, we can’t promise we’ll have time to get to every question. But we’ll try and in many cases we’ll provide you with an opportunity to keep the conversation going after the live event ends.
What is chat, and how do I use it?
Chat is a quick messaging tool we can use to send notes to all participants. If you have questions for the presenter, please use the Q&A tool, not chat.
What is a poll, and how do I use it?
Polls are a great tool for getting input from all the webinar participants, much as you might do a show of hands at a live workshop. When the host opens a poll, you’ll see the question appear in your sidebar. Select or type your answer and submit.
