In the rush of holiday busyness, I have purchased and relied upon more of those chocolate-filled, cardboard Advent calendars than I’d like to admit. The chocolates are always fun, and tasty, but often, just days into Advent, I find myself bemoaning the fact that little faith is formed in using this tool to simply ‘count down’ to Christmas.
Like so many parents, I long to help my kids focus on the greater meaning of Christmas by observing Advent in a way that spiritually prepares their hearts and minds. But all too often, the busyness of the Christmas season gets in the way.
If you can relate, I encourage you to check out Kids Corner’s new “Gifts of Kindness” Advent Calendar activity. This free, printable resource from ReFrame Media includes daily and weekly faith focused activities that you and your family can do together not only to count down the days until Christmas, but also to prepare your hearts for the greatest of gifts, Jesus Christ.
The Kids Corner Advent calendar activity contains twenty-two dated ornaments (one for each day of Advent) and five family devotionals. Each day, commit to giving one “Gift of Kindness” to someone in your life. Write the gift of kindness on that day's ornament and hang the ornament on a string, your Christmas tree, or the wall. Then, on Sundays, read the week's devotional as a family and reflect on the importance of giving kindness and serving others.
As each day of Advent passes, your ornament collection will grow, and the gifts of kindness they represent will focus your Advent on Jesus Christ, and shape your heart to be more like his.
