Seymour Church in Grand Rapids, MI, is seeking to fill a 25 hour per week position for a Director of Music and Worship. This position requires music proficiency and an ability to play and plan a variety of worship styles in a multi-generational setting within the Christian Reformed perspective of Blended Worship.

Job Description

The Director of Music and Worship is a 25 hour/week position that will lead and oversee our music and worship ministries. This person will work with the Pastor of Worship and Administration (Lead Pastor), Liturgy Team, and Worship Team to plan services that are centered in God-glorifying worship that is accessible, blended in musical style and tradition, inclusive, and celebrates God’s redeeming work in Jesus Christ.

Responsibilities

  1. Worship Planning

    1. Work with the Pastor of Worship and Administration and the Liturgy Team to plan Sunday morning worship.

    2. Maintain schedules for and coordinate with the worship team, projection team, liturgists, accompanists, choir and ensemble groups.

    3. Maintain the master worship schedule.

    4. Prepare slides for songs and other projected service elements.

    5. Work with the Office Administrator to prepare the weekly worship folder.

  2. Worship Leadership

    1. Work in cooperation with the pastor and liturgist to lead worship for Sunday morning services and church worship events (retreats, special services, etc.).

    2. Equip and encourage volunteer participation in the music and worship ministries.

    3. Oversee and equip volunteer leaders in specialized music ministries such as the worship team, choirs, various ensembles, instrumentalists, and vocal solos.

    4. Chair and lead the Liturgy Team.

  3. Administrative

    1. Attend weekly staff meetings.

    2. Prepare an annual budget for the music and worship ministries of the church.

    3. Maintain copyright license agreements (e.g. CCLI).

    4. Arrange for the care and maintenance of the church’s musical instruments (piano tunings, organ maintenance, etc.).

    5. Work with the Pastor of Worship and Administration to identify areas of professional growth, and commit to taking regular steps to grow in knowledge or skills related to this position.

Qualifications

  • An authentic, growing relationship with Jesus Christ.

  • Demonstrate a servant heart for the church.

  • Ability to lead worship from an instrument.

  • Demonstrate a knowledge of, appreciation for, and ability to work in a variety of musical genres and styles (blended worship).

  • Ability to work well in the context of a team ministry setting.

  • Affirm Reformed theology and church polity and demonstrate awareness of Reformed liturgical principles.

  • Exercise active membership at Seymour Church.

  • Ability to plan ahead and keep multiple services and schedules organized.

  • Have a working knowledge of sound and projection technologies, or a willingness to learn. 

Accountability

The Director of Music and Worship is directly responsible and accountable to the Pastor of Worship and Administration (Lead Pastor) and ultimately to the Council.

Compensation

The Director of Music and Worship is a part-time position, requiring approximately 25 hours/week. Compensation will be commensurate with experience and agreed upon by the Director of Music and Worship and the Administrative Board of Seymour Church.
