We've given up a lot in the last couple of years. In many ways, it feels like one thing after another.

During this season of Lent, which is often associated with giving something up for the purpose of prayer and reflection, Connections Church in Denver, Colorado is inviting you to a Lent of creativity and wonder.

When the Covid-19 pandemic hit in March 2020, this congregation was participating in the CRC's Lent Photo challenge. The simple act of taking a daily photo while reflecting on a Scripture word kept them connected even though they were physically distanced.

Robin Saylor was inspired to come up with a similar Lenten practice for her church, and for other churches, this year. She often does art journaling and other creative work and wanted to give people an opportunity to actively engage in the spiritual discipline of creativity this year.

Their project consists of daily devotions, which include a short Scripture passage, a single word for reflection, and a prayer. The Scripture coincides with the Revised Common Lectionary texts so this is a unique way to participate in unity with sisters and brothers in Christ around the world whose hearts will also be engaging the same verses but in a variety of different ways.

Each day, people are invited to participate in a creative response to the Word, either through art, music, writing, calligraphy, photography, and more. Responses can be posted on social media using the hashtag #IMAGESOFLENT22 (so others can see the ways the Holy Spirit is working in hearts through Word and worship).

Below you will find a pdf of the devotional, as well as several photos from Robin's journal. She has also provided an Amazon list for those interested in art journaling and welcomes your questions via email ([email protected]). There is also a growing Spotify playlist called "Images of Lent 22" that you can use for worship and reflection.

Join Connections Church this Lent for a season of creativity and wonder!

Thank you for writing this Robin.  And thank you for sharing this on the Network.  I know many in our church (Connections) are very excited about this.  I hope others will be blessed on their Lenten journey.
