Imagine someone comes knocking at your door or at your church door asking for help. What are the first questions you ask them? What questions would be most helpful and empowering for the person?

After decades of development work overseas, we have learned that questions can greatly influence relationships and the journey of human development, whether in developing countries or in local neighborhoods at home. One of the most often used and problematic questions is: "What do you need?"

Why do you think that is? What would be more empowering questions to ask or responses to give to someone who is asking for help?
