"The revelation of Jesus Christ which God gave him to show his servants what must soon take place." Revelation 1:1

God gave this revelation to John so we would know more about Jesus than was recorded in the Gospels, not only so that we would know more about future events.

The Gospels are mostly about Jesus in his humiliation from his birth to his crucifixion. Only one or two chapters of each of the four are about his resurrection and his glory.

God decided that we need to know more about Jesus in his glorious exaltation. We need to know that he is "the firstborn from the dead, the ruler of the kings of the earth, the one who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood, the alpha and the omega, who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty, the son of man...whose eyes are like blazing fire, whose feet are like bronze glowing in a furnace, whose voice is like the sound of rushing water, out of whose mouth comes a double-edged sword, whose face is like the sun shining in all its brilliance, the living one, who was dead and is alive forever and ever, the one who holds the keys of death and Hades."

With those keys he will unlock every grave when he comes back to earth. Then, with John, we too will fall at his feet. Fixing our eyes on Jesus in his glory now, we are strengthened to face whatever lies ahead of us in this life.
