I first connect with each prospective pastor and give them some background information on the position and our church. I then email each pastor with more detailed information and give them time to review the possibilities with their family and pray about it. Allowing them time to email me back eliminates the “confrontational approach” of expecting them to answer yes or no right away.
Here is a sample email I send to the pastors:
I’m a member of the Duncan CRC Pastor Search Committee. I was asked to connect with you since we are looking for a new pastor and your name came up as someone who might be a good fit.
To simplify the process and hopefully make the responses more consistent, would you please select one of the three options below? Feel free to add any additional comments if you so desire.
- Yes, I am willing to consider a call from your church.
- I am willing to have a conversation but wonder if this will lead to further interaction about a potential call.
- At this time I am not able to consider a call to your church.
Thank you! May God bless you in your present and future ministry.
Hope this helps! What does your process look like?
