This was the first webinar of the 2021 Series: On Being a Safe Church! In these webinars, we will be hearing from a variety of people that will inspire us to wonder together at how best we can create healthy and safe cultures in our congregations and communities.

In this first webinar Dr. Amanda Benckhuysen led us in a conversation exploring biblical perspectives on human dignity to help us reflect on what it means to live out this truth in our church life together. The underlying questions this webinar explored were:

  • What does it mean that human beings are made in the image of God and created with inherent dignity and worth?
  • How does this impact the way we think about and treat each other?
  • What do we owe those around us because they are image-bearers of God?

Dr. Amanda Benckhuysen is the author of The Gospel According to Eve: A History of Women's Interpretation (2019) and Immigrants, the Bible, and You (2020). Before becoming the director of Safe Church Ministry, Amanda served as professor of Old Testament at Calvin Theological Seminary (Grand Rapids, Mich.). She has also taught at the University of Dubuque (Iowa) Theological Seminary and was a campus minister at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. B.A. (Queen’s University, 1992) M.Div. (Calvin Theological Seminary, 1997) Ph.D. (University of St. Michael’s College, Toronto School of Theology, 2010)
