Yvonne Lammers, Safe Church Coordinator in Classis Chatham, shares this with us. We're hoping it will perhaps encourage other classes to take a similar action and/or to consider ways that your classis might use a Safe Church Mini-Grant. Watch for details in the next few months about how to apply for a Safe Church mini-grant in 2019.

Recognizing the need for greater access to a fund available for individuals impacted by abuse, the Classis Chatham Safe Church Committee applied for a mini-grant from CRCNA Safe Church Ministry to produce a promotional video.

The intent of the video was a message that acknowledged the realities of abuse within churches, revealed the church responding in a tangible way, and supported individuals impacted to feel safe in coming forward for support.

Classis Chatham Safe Church Committee received the mini-grant and moved forward with a production company in producing the video.  The end result exceeded expectations and the committee is encouraging all churches in Classis Chatham to show the video,  hoping many will do so on September 23,  Abuse Awareness Sunday.

The Classis Chatham Safe Church counselling fund has been in existence since 2013 and provides financial support to those accessing therapy sessions; supporting them in their healing journey from the impact of abuse.  To date 15 individuals have accessed this fund and the Committee recognizes there are many more who may benefit.

The fund is confidential with individuals or their support person (pastor, friend) accessing one of the three committee members through the contact information on the pamphlet.  The committee member will gather minimal information and connect with the two other committee members to approve the request.   Funds are then sent directly to the individual’s therapist.

It is our hope and prayer that this video will be seen as a response of compassion - seeking justice and fostering healing.
