Disability Concerns

You’re pleased the Carters have joined your congregation, and you want things to go well for Matthew, who has autism, but you’re feeling intimidated because you don’t know how to make things work for him.

Here’s a thought to ponder: if the 50 million people with disabilities in the U.S. voted as a block, they would decide every single election for president.

What is a worship “disruption”? If someone is really excited about worship and cries out during the service, is he or she disrupting the service or participating in the service?

This year’s election cycle provides an excellent opportunity to influence local, state, and federal elected officials for the good of citizens who live with various disabilities. 

This letter was sent by friends to the elders of their congregation on behalf of a friend and fellow member who has Multiple Chemical Sensitivities.

Who wants to listen to people prattle on about “God’s will” when, frankly, they don’t have a clue what the mind of God is with regard to any particular situation? 

Compassion for suffering, protection of vulnerable people and celebration and affirmation of life are three reasons why I am pro-life and oppose assisted suicide.

Do you get a day off if you are unemployed? No, until you're hired, there's no taking off from unemployment. 

Seeing Ralph in the Intensive Care Unit, I was astounded by the peace with which he faces life, death, and the severe limitations his pain and poor lung condition have imposed on him. 

People with disabilities are significantly over-represented in jails compared to the general population. Inadequate defense is a major reason. But, change is happening in Michigan and hopefully it spreads.

Judy, who has used a wheelchair to get around for the past year, has some advice for showing common courtesy. It’s simple stuff, the kind of thing you learn in kindergarten but quickly forget.

"What gives consistency to people is to know that they are loved. To love is not to do things for people, it’s not to tell people what to do, it’s to reveal. What do we reveal?"
