Where can I find Tumbleweed Gulch VBS materials?

A few years ago my children attended the Tumbleweed Gulch vbs in a neighboring church. This VBS had a Western theme. We are very interested in using the Tumbleweed curriculum in our church this year. We got most of the materials, but are still missing the drama and promo dvd (with music videos/songs) and the Elementary Bible Stories Leader's Guide. Is there anybody out there who still has those items? Could our church buy them from you? The Elementary Opening&Closing Program Leader's Guide would be helpful as well, but is less important. I contacted the editor of the VBS materials (...

Can you share a success story about starting a young adults program at your church?

In our area right now, it is a big problem that when people get to their early twenties, many of them leave the church where they've spent their entire lives and go to another church. For us it seems that people are just going to another church because everyone else goes to that church. What really kills me is that around here, this "cool" church is actually a "non-denominational" Baptist church. In order to participate in ministry there, these folks must be re-baptized, since this church does not recognized infant baptism. To try to combat this problem, we are starting a Young Adult ministry...

Do you have suggestions for evangelism in rural America?

This is mainly a topic starter for rural churches in the States. I'm not sure how much this is similar to Canada, but I'd rather not assume. One of my passions and gifts is in evangelism. I've been used by God in many places in doing evangelism, training others in evanelism, etc. Yet, when I came out to rural America, I've found evangelism a bit harder than normal. I've learned that the stories in rural America stretch back generations, as do the memories. You don't just know a person, you know a family. And when new people move into town, it can be a bit hard if they don't know anyone or...

How does a church run a healing prayer ministry?

Hi folks, Anybody running a healing prayer ministry? What does it look like? How do you operate? At New Life CRC in Guelph, Ontario we've had a Healing Prayer Ministry since about 2005. We've slowly evolved our focus. Today the ministry has two primary focus: 1. Intercessory prayer for the church 2. In-depth prayer for individuals who come from prayer Our intercessory sessions typically flow as one-third worship, one-third prayer for a specific ministry of the church (we rotate through a list) and one-third prayer for individual needs and requests. Our in-depth sessions usually start with...

How does a church plan a "Coming Home" service?

Hi folks, Our church, together with a couple others in our area, are beginning to plan a "coming home" prayer service. The main impetus for this is that a young person in our congregation ran away from home over the summer, and her parents still can't find her. So, the service is first of all a time to come together to pray for this family, and to pray that this teenager would come home. But we also decided to expand the service to include prayer for people we love who need to "come home" in other ways, too: those who have strayed from the faith, those who are in estranged relationships, etc...

Where can I find information about a Classis Prayer Coordinator?

Classis Yellowstone's Prayer Coordinator retired, and as Stated Clerk I am attempting to encourage another individual to take up the task. Now as I begin to reacquaint myself with the Prayer Coordinator ministry, I have be browsing the CRCNA & Home Mission's webpages for more information. Classis Renewal has been a good source in the past, but I hesitate to refer anyone to that website since it boldly proclaims- " This section of our site is being retired, and information may be dated... " Now that really is not good " marketing " for someone who is thinking or planning to get involved...

Do you know of specific CRC churches that would be considered "houses of prayer?"

Over the last couple of months several people have asked me, "Do you know of some Christian Reformed Churches that would be considered 'Houses of Prayer' or 'Churches Dedicated to Prayer?'" I know a few, but since my knowledge of every individual congregation is limited, I am sure there are numerous churches with a vibrant commitment to prayer and prayer ministry I am not aware of. Do you consider your church a praying church? Are there other models of praying churches in your area, classis, region that could serve as encouragement to churches beginning to intentionally prioritize prayer...

What is listening prayer?

ok, with the intro at Synod (Tues pm1 @ about 37 minutes in) to our new home missions director, Moses Chung, I want to raise some questions on listening prayer. How much do we do listening prayer in corporate/communal settings? In the intro, Brother James, pres. of home missions, said, " God spoke to us and said, "This is the person..." Now I know the scriptures do not say, "In 2011, the CRC Home Missions will appoint Moses for their director". So, how did they "hear Him? After hundreds of years of cessationism, that we refuted in the 1973 Synod, where are we at with listening prayer? Do we...

What suggestions do you have for a church prayer retreat?

One of the goals for our church in this coming year is to have a prayer retreat. I led one a couple of years ago, but I'd like to hear what other churches have done. If your church has had a prayer retreat what was the format? Was it one day or a weekend? Was it on your church campus or off site? What did you use for materials? Any other thoughts or suggestions? Thank you for sharing. Steve Nyenhuis

Can you share your church's experience with "Strategic Prayer Initiative?"

Does anyone have experience with Strategic Prayer Initiative ? It was developed through Harvest Prayer Ministries (a group that CRC'er Al VanderGriend is on staff with). My church is considering it as a more systematic approach to our prayer ministry. But we'd really love to hear from churches who have checked it out or tried it. Anyone?

Do you do sermon series?

I was just wondering, what formats people use/like in preaching. I tend to do sermon series lasting roughly 3-5 Sundays each on a topic or section of the Bible. what about you? Do you do any of these? Or, do you like listening to sermon series or not?

What have you found effective to help church members discover their spiritual gifts?

A couple of the tasks in my job description are, "Develop and implement a process for identifying and developing members gifts, talents, and passions for ministry" and "Assist with finding gifted members to join in the ministries." My guess is that other Ministry Coordinators probably have similar tasks in their own job descriptions. I was able to get a great head start on some ideas for teaching about spiritual gifts from somone I connected with here on the network (Thanks, Denise!) but I was curious what other ideas might be out there for this aspect of ministry. What have you found...

Sticky situation: when is it time to discontinue a ministry?

Have you ever had to discontinue or end a ministry? What are the signs that it's time? How do you explain to the congregation that something is ending? What if you have a passionate volunteer, but it just doesn't make sense to continue to put other resources behind it (finances, staff time, etc.)? I feel I should qualify my question by stating that this is purely theoretical at the moment, I'm not actually facing this question. Rather it comes more from the perspective of how to best use a finite number of volunteers and ministry funds. Say we want to "make room" for new ministries, but it's...
