Small Groups - Where Discipleship Happens

To whom are you accountable for your spiritual and moral life...besides God? The once-a-year elder visit (if it still exists) provides a superficial check list at best. Small groups, done properly, provide a setting for both spiritual growth and moral accountability.

Tips for Small Group Success?

A recent Banner article gave a sample structure for small group meetings and got me thinking about my own experience. I came up with a list of what I've seen work well and wondered, what would you add?

Relational Evangelism Tools

“I will be visiting a close relative in the next couple of weeks. My relative is not a Christian. I would love to give them a pamphlet or small book which explains the gospel. What would you suggest?”

Small Group Multiplication?

I would like to hear the thoughts of those who are a part of small group ministry on what they think about multiplication. There seems to be this tension between staying in a group and multiplying them. I hear some say that they won't break up their group because they have grown a strong and deep friendship so they feel safe and can share more initimately. Then I hear about how multiplying can destroy the age-oldproblem of cliques, naturally invite new people into Bible study, and increase the number of those who are involved. I would like to hear thoughts from those who have been a part of...

The Harbinger by Jonathan Cahn

The Bible Study group/small group that I am part of has decided to study the book "the Harbinger" by Jonathan Cahn. I have mixed feelings about this book being an appropriate one for use as a Bible Study. In my opinion the passage of Isaiah 9:10-11 is only loosely connected with the book. I am wondering if anyone has read the book, I would appreciate some advice on whether this would be a good book for a Bible Study or not.

Church wide Bible Study topics?

Does anyone know of a Bible Study that can be used for an entire Church that helps people grow in a deeper relationship with the Lord? That will cause them to be more involved in their relationship with God. As well as cause them to live lives more abundantly in Jesus. I find there is a real disconnect between the lives that we live and the ones we should be living as Christians!

Small Group Ministries and coordinating with the Library Ministry

Our small group committee has asked to become more aware of the work that the Library Ministry is doing. Do you utilize or coordinate with your church Library to purchase study material? Encourage people to donate their small group material for others to use? Are you as a small group ministry aware of what is in your library? If you coordinate with your library how do you do so? Any feedback would be great! I am trying to get all our church ministries to be aware of the Church Library as a foundational resource ministry for the whole church congragation. 40 days of Prayer banner - free if you can use it

Our church used the Love to Pray materials (available from Faith Alive) for a whole-church small group program about 2 years ago and had a banner made to hang at church during the series. The banner is approximately 7 feet by 3 feet, could be used indoors or outdoors, and has grommets to hang it. It reads "40 Days of Prayer - Recharge your Prayer Life!" We spent about $100-150 to have it produced, but would be happy to pass it on at no cost if another church can make use of it. (If you wanted to cover the shipping, that would be extra nice.) View the banner here: http://lh3.ggpht.com/...

"Descubriendo Tu Biblia"

Sermon Study Group

Hi All, Here's the situation. One of the members of our congregation would like to have a women's group do a "sermon study" for their meetings and wondered if we have resources on how to go about doing that. Nothing comes to mind except the preacher. Of course, this is a little tricky if two of the three preachers are men and the one female is about to go on mat leave. Have any of you done sermon based small groups? Any of you have any good advice or resources on how best to do this? Other thoughts? In Christ, Mike

Discipleship small group

During advisory committee sessions at Synod 2010, delegates will have times of reflection and dialogue based on Bill Hull's The Disciplemaking Pastor. I read it years ago, and now reflecting on going back to a dsicplemaking mode in my life and ministry again. (Been nurtured through a Navigators group in the Philippines in my early years in the faith.) So my series of questions are: has any of you read this book - or perhaps Jesus Disciplemaker, The Disciplemaking Church, Training of the Twelve? But not just having read any of these. Has anyone become passionately convinced that discipling or...

Congregational Survey

Hi Everybody! I am in the process of (re)launching a small groups ministry in October in a church with 500+ members. At the moment I am working on writing a congregational survey to get a sense what the formating and style of the small groups program should be. What questions should the congregation be asked? What questions make for a good small groups survey? Do you have any examples or know where to find some? Thanks! Mike Vander Laan Pastor of Discipleship and Small Groups CrossPoint CRC - Brampton

Small Groups and "The Least of These"

There is a segment of the "small group" movement that bothers me and I'm not sure if it should. See if you can pick up on it below and tell me what your take is. SYMPTOM #1: I attended the highly-touted missional community conference VERGE 2010 this weekend in Austin and there were some wonderful speakers and great thought-starters. In all, one of the best conferences I've ever been to. But I noticed one thing: I would guestimate that 75% (or more) of the attenders fit this exact demographic: male, white, college-educated. An only slightly smaller percentage also used Macs, wore Rob Bell...

Small Group Ministry in the CRC

I think this site has some great potential if enough movers and shakers in the denomination get on board. That being said, I am curious about the number of churches using small groups as THE key component in their discipling of believers. And if you are how are they set up? Do you use a certain model or concoction of models to fit your context.
