All Inclusion Is Local

If you live with a disability, what has your church done so that you know you a part of the church community? Or parents of a child with a disability, how did you know that you AND your child were welcome? Or church leaders, what is your church doing to welcome someone who is living with a disability?

Task Survey / Gift Survey

One of the sessions at the Disability Concerns Conference I went to talked about a different kind of gift survey they did in their church, where they matched people up with a specific task and what the member offered to do. I was wondering if I could have that list of tasks so I can help develop one for our church.

What Do You Hear?

I often wonder what it will be like if someday I face dementia or Alzheimer's disease. Perhaps my future will be like a house of mirrors; with all the voices playing tricks on me. Regardless, I am confident I will be able to hear my Father's voice.

Do you have any advice or information about starting up support groups for parents?

Hello everyone! I am looking for any advice and information about starting up support groups for parents. I have a wonderful lady in my church (who is our parish nurse) that has been really excited to start a parent group in our community. We have had a lot of expressed interest in this with other local parents.I am helping her get some contacts and some ideas on how to start it, how to organize meetings, what to discuss...anything! I would love to hear back from anyone that is part of a group like this and let me know how your group works....Looking forward to hearing from you :) melissa

Hidden Blessings

I find it hard to see everyone attend Christmas concerts and go to many Christmas dinners while I consider if it's worth it to attend the same things because what if Savanah catches another cold or the flu which then makes it such a struggle for her to breathe and eat ... and yet I believe that God has seen my tears.

How have you dealt with resolving sibling resentment?

Let's face it, having a child with a disability affects the whole family. As parents, we legitimately need to give extra time and attention to a child who struggles with physical, intellectual, or emotional challenges. What are some ways you've dealt with resentment from your other children for the amount of attention your special needs child is given? I would love to hear not only from families whose children are still at home, but also from families whose children are grown. Parents of adult children with disabilities still continue to give them a large percentage of their time - especially...

Hidden Truths

In three of the gospels (Matthew 17:14-21, Mark 9:14-29, Luke 9:37-42) there is an account of a sick boy that was healed by Jesus. From the three accounts I am able to draw the following picture of what happened in my mind.

My Heart Hurts

The reality of my daughter's disability hit home at the IEP meeting a few days ago. I know, she brings many blessings and I should look at all of the positive aspects of the situation. But isn't it okay to say that my heart aches for the "normal-ness" that I dreamed about for her? Do any other parents struggle with this?

Is the Walking With People With Mental Illness webinar on Sept 26 or still on the proposed list?

Is the Walking With People With Mental Illness for Sept 26th.or still a proposed one? I'm confused. I received an email saying it was scheduled and to register which I did. I was just getting the details to ask others to join me and saw it was still in the proposed section. Could you clear this up so I can ask others to join when it is scheduled? Thanks so much. The contact option in the webinar section isn't supported by email server, gmail. There is no email address given so I'm trying this way to find out the answer to my question.

How has your church celebrated disability week?

In response to my blog last week about Disability Week, Steve Nyenhuis asked, "Our church celebrated Disability Awareness Sunday yesterday. Our Friendship Class joined the praise team in leading the congregation in worship. Members of the class also participated by greeting and ushering, reading Scripture and bringing God's greeting. Our pastor used Luke 14:1-14 as his text. All who worshipped were blessed, I'm sure. What other churches participated? Can you share your experiences, too?"

How do I prepare for the future for my child?

My wife Bev and I have had 25 years of experience in walking with our daughter Nicole, who lives with severe, multiple disabilities. Thanks to Bev's forward thinking, we've prayed, and sought advice, and read books and magazines so that we could keep looking ahead to do what's best for Nicole. I ran across this brief guide today that looks like it could be very helpful: Charting the Life Course: A Guide for Individuals, Families, and Professionals . Charting the Life Course uses a matrix of six life stages: 1) Wondering if Meeting Milestones, 2) Getting the Diagnosis, 3) Everyday Life during...
