Biblical Commentaries

I chair our church's education committee and am looking for recommendations vis-a-vis resources for biblical and theological literacy. Any advice along these lines would be most appreciated.

What is your system for song tracking?

Currently I use an Excel Spreadsheet to track which songs I select each week. It basically is a database/library of all the songs that I've planned on which dates. This gives me a reference to go back to when I wonder: when did I last use that song, or have we ever sung that song here before? Are there any better systems, or maybe even programs out there for this type of thing? Ideally I would like to be able to categorize, or even search for songs instead of having to scroll through the whole list I have. What's your system for cataloguing and tracking your church's song repertoire?

Do you write a blog?

Two questions here: 1) Do you write a blog? If you do, could you please post it to this forum. I've enjoyed reading other pastor's blogs over this last year. It's been helfpul in gainging insight to different ways of preaching, doing ministry and in general what's out there. 2)If you don't have a blog, is there a blog you read on a regular basis that you really like? Could you please post it here as well and share? Thanks. by the way, here's mine www.spiritualmusclehead.blogspot.com

Can churches offer a dual membership option (like dual citizenship) to their snow birds?

A not-so-hypothetical question: you have snow birds who have been attending your congregation for a couple of years. They've resisted membership because they maintain membership in their "southern" church. Now they are wondering if they can become dual members (like dual citizenship?) at both churches. Their hearts are in the right place - they want to have committed relationships with the congregation that they are in. They know that membership does not provide them with much in terms of benefits, since we will care for them regardless. They simply want to formalize the relationship. So,...

Do you have any advice or information about starting up support groups for parents?

Hello everyone! I am looking for any advice and information about starting up support groups for parents. I have a wonderful lady in my church (who is our parish nurse) that has been really excited to start a parent group in our community. We have had a lot of expressed interest in this with other local parents.I am helping her get some contacts and some ideas on how to start it, how to organize meetings, what to discuss...anything! I would love to hear back from anyone that is part of a group like this and let me know how your group works....Looking forward to hearing from you :) melissa

What has been your experience with Article 17 A?

Maybe this topic is a little too painful for some but I am hoping there is some healthy comments and advise we can share with one another. Some of you have experienced the pain of Article 17. Maybe it wasn't even painful for you? Some of you found great ways to heal and grow others are still in that process. I'm wodering if those who are well along in their healing might share what you found helpful or not so helpful. Please no grinding axes though.

Organ and Praise Band - Have you had success with a blended worship style?

I graduated from Calvin two and a half years ago. At Calvin I was a part of the worship teams for LOFT and chapel (piano and organ). At those services we regularly used the organ as an "orchestral" instrument to supplement the rhythm instruments of the praise band. I am now the director of music at my church in New Jersey. Ordinarily, we just use the organ on the "traditional hymns" and the praise band on the "contemporary songs". (I really hate that lingo, by the way. But that's a conversation for another post). I am trying to convince the worship coordinator and praise band coordinator to...

Can you share your experience about creating videos and graphics for your church or ministry?

I have not come across many churches in the CRC creating original multi-media material. Maybe I just haven't come in contact with churches doing it yet. Is there anyone involved in creating videos and graphics for their churches (or even for other ministries outside our churches)? I would love to hear what you do and begin the conversation. Our church recently purchased the Adobe Creative Suite which has allowed us to really expand artistically and I love seeing what other churches are doing. After reading through some of the threads, I saw a suggestion to create a location on the web for...

Does a church need to have a movie license?

Our smallish church gave up our movie license recently b/c the new pastor doesn't use movie clips in his sermons. However, the Missions Planning Team just decided to host movie nights (3 in total) and can't justify spending $475 per year or $150 per movie. Any suggestions without scrapping the movies all together?

What resources are available for training church tech team members?

Wondering how you all train your potential tech team members. Sound, projection, lighting etc. Do you have someone in your church who is proficient in each department to teach others or are volunteers handed the keys and told to make it up as they go? I'm interested in making sure that our incoming techies have a good understanding before they are put incharge, are there any good resources out there for training in these areas? Doug

Who can recommend a resource to help optimize a church video projection system?

Our worship center is rather short from front-to-back and the screen which was initially installed (in the center) covers the cross which is behind the pulpit. In addition, there is a clear-story above the front of the room so we have ambient light conditions to confront. I'm researching the components for a dual screen/projector setup to solve these issues. Between screen gain ratings and projector brightness ratings it gets pretty confusing. Then there are references to "calibrating" projectors to the kind of screen you have. I've yet to find any impartial resources about how it all fits...

Has the use of projection technology helped or hindered your worship experience?

There is some discussion in our church about projecting the words to songs or scripture verses on the large overhead screen above the pulpit. There are some who say this helps engage the congregation, and other who feel that it's intrusive, distracting, and disconnects us from our hymnals and bibles. How does your congregation use projection technology, and how has that helped or hindered your worship experience?

How does your church promote the growth of Cadet Club?

Our Cadet club has been shrinking for the last several years. We have terrific co-ordinator who truly loves the ministry and the boys, but it seems like each year there are less and less boys who attend. I am wondering what other CRCs have done to promote their Cadet clubs and increase their membership. Is this a denomination wide problem, or is it just our goup? I wonder if a name change would help....??? Any ideas would be great! Yours in Christ, Grace

Do you know of websites that would interest children or adults that we could add to a church library webpage?

We are almost ready to put our church's library online. I would like to have links to interesting websites for both children and adults. For the adult section I am looking for links to Bible helps or study, further Christian learning, virtual tours of Christian places in the world, Christian art, or basically anything that CRC users might find interesting For the children I would like links to Christian games or fun activities. My dearest wish is for the Banner to put their children's page online. What a resource that would be!! Please send me your ideas or comments.

What suggestions do you have for college-age ministry?

Our church is considering beginning a ministry for college-age students. It would be a continuation of youth group, but would require a new formula to reach the challenges and interests of students in this group. Any ideas or thoughts? Any others have an existing ministry at their church?

What suggestions do you have for evening VBS?

This summer our church (Kitchener, Ontario Canada) ran an evening VBS. Do any other churches out there do this? What are the keys to it being successful? We want to try it again in 2011, but we want to get wise to better ways of doing things.
