Deacons

All church officers (elders and deacons) represent Christ, the Lord, in the corporate life of his people. The office of deacon is designed to administer the mercy of Christ to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.

Reflecting on the Call to Deacons

In the context of today's world the mandate of mercy and justice that is at the heart of the call on the office of deacon is both profound and challenging. We need to keep the call in front of us as deacons to continue to live into it more fully

Calling All Who Minister

Has the concept of “calling” been hijacked by the institutional church?  I wonder.  In our Reformed theological tradition we acknowledge the priesthood of all believers.

Which office discusses and decides who is eligible for call to Elders and Deacons?

In the CRC Church Order, Article 4 seems to make clear that the calling of Elders and Deacons is entirely the responsibility of the Council and clearly spells the process out. Article 35a seems to give a little wiggle room where the Consistory can say it determines the qualities of who is eligible because 35a states the Council "Approves" the nominations as one of the example of its tasks. Throughout the Church order, it takes great pains to describe the tasks of each of the 3 offices and what they do. It goes to the extreme in 35b & c and states in those articles (paraphrased here,) that...

Everyone's A Deacon!

There's the old joke about how the Bible says that the man is always supposed to make coffee - HE BREWS - but I'm not making a joke when I say WE'RE ALL DEACONS!  Are you surprised?  Worried? Eager? Confused?

Deacons Stepping Up?

Jeff Brower's post, "Deacons - Priests or Kings?" is a gem.  Wish I had written it.   It stimulates us to think about deacons and their authority, their relationship to the Kingly dimension of Jesus' identity.  But it also reminds us of a 43 year old report to Synod - where the "unfullfilled" nature of the deacons' role is acknowledged!    What's happened since?

Deacons - Be Known!

It's easy to assume everyone knows who the deacons are, or what they do in a congregation, however that's not the truth!  And when people are confused about what a deacon is, or who to contact when there is a concern, your ministry will not fully attain all its potential. Here are 5 things you can do to be known in your congregation:

Deacon Support Networks

We all need a little help now and then. Though we may like to believe we can do it ourselves, we actually might be able to do our ministry more effectively by getting some assistance. Fortunately for deacons there are organizations and resources available to support us. In this blog two are named - and we're looking for more...
