A Place at the Table

A Place at the Table shows us how hunger poses serious economic, social and cultural implications for our nation, and that it could be solved once and for all, if the American public decides that making healthy food available and affordable is in the best interest of us all.

A Little Hermenuetical Guidance

Reading through Chapter three of 1 Timothy, I encountered verse 11. Under the Greek word appears the word "women" followed by the word "deaconesses" in straight brackets. Is this an accurate interpretation of this Greek word?

Responding to the CRWRC Funding Gap

Given the recent news that CRWRC will experience a $1.1 million gap in funding this year due to loss of funding from CIDA, I was wondering if deacons/congregations are doing anything to address this particular need, beyond any normally scheduled offerings for CRWRC.

Feedback to Pastors

Data on CRC congregations and pastors from the Third Wave Report continues to nag at me. It appears that routine feedback to pastors from their councils is a very valuable tool! So, wouldn't you think we'd be doing that as one of our "disciplines"?

The Stewardship Thing

Mission isn't optional — it's the proper lens through which to see stewardship. The annual budget is the most missional document in the church. How can we clearly communicate that to the people that we serve?

Relationships

False intimacy is one of the great dangers of mission. What kind of intimacy makes us true missionaries? In our families? In our neighborhoods? In our global outreach? What do you think?

www.TakeThemAMeal.com

I just became aware of the site www.TakeThemAMeal.com which is a "free online tool for coordinating the delivery of meals to someone in need". Has anyone used this site? It seems like it could be a real time-saver compared to doing it all by phone.

mercy

I'm reflecting on the sentence in the deacon's charge: "Teach us to be merciful." What does that really mean? How do the deacons in your church teach the congregation to be merciful?

Bob, It's Time to Engage

Deacons are ordained as leaders — first and foremost as spiritual leaders. That means that their task is not first and foremost about developing better techniques, but first and foremost about seeking to develop transformed souls — within themselves and within those whom they serve.

Training Options for Deacons

The Chalmers Center for Economic Development at Covenant College has as its stated purpose to "Help the Church Help the Poor Help Themselves". As well as several options for those outside the US, it also offers two web-based training modules which are available either in a distance learning format or a self-study format.

Video Resources

I'm interested in some brief video resources that could be played during an offering. I'm thinking of things that would highlight work done by Home Missions, CRWRC, Back to God Hour, etc. or non-denominational ministries

Looking at Acts 6

Looking at the "deacon chapter" of Acts 6 is interesting, in that I find it to be a place where my cultural assumptions about the diaconate can easily smother what the chapter actually says.
