Should We Apologize for Excommunication?

Assume that 50 years ago a consistory excommunicated a member for engaging in snowmobile races and missing church on Sundays. Should we apologize for church practices that we would no longer engage in?

Administrative vs. Pastoral Elders?

I am wondering if anyone knows if there is some sort of records or database regarding how many churches in the CRC have made the transition from a traditional Council structure to a model where Elders and Deacons are split into administrative and pastoral type roles?

Transfer Lapsed Members?

We have a family requesting transfer to another CRC they have been attending for 7 years. They were declared lapsed in 2009. Is it still appropriate to send a letter of transfer?

Do You Have a Conflict Resolution Policy?

Our Consistory has asked the Council Executive to look into proposing a “policy”, or set of guidelines, that can be implemented in the event of a conflict arising within our community that requires some guidance from outside the conflict to resolve in a pastoral manner.

Elder/Deacon nominees?

What are effective ways to get people to stand for church leadership positions? More and more the comment is, "I know you have a hard time getting elders and deacons, but I can't/won't do that." Or, "I don't feel qualified to do that--why does the Council keep nominating me." Especially frustrating in regard to the latter is that even when we suggest that none of us truly have those gifts, but for the Holy Spirit's work, the answer is still "no." The problem is that in a small congregation, that means the same few people continue to step up to serve. I'd love to hear how other congregations...

Do you have a policy re weddings?

Further to the Church Order, has anyone formulated a policy or guideline to determine under what conditions a couple can be married in your church? Question came up in a Consistory meeting, thinking about past marriages between believers and non-believers who subsequently disappeared. What about facilities rentals?

How much information do elders have on members' financial offerings to the church?

Around this time each year our council receives the financial results for the church year, and we also recieve statistics on the annual giving of our members (without names). We then have a recurring discussion from the year before noting certain patterns and how many "zeros" there are. The question arises whether the elders and/or deacons should have knowledge of the names of members' financial contributions to the church? We feel there is no need to have this information unless we are actually planning to do something useful with it. What is a pastoral way to handle the information that we...
