Is it healthy for a council led church to have full time staff as a permanent part of council as an elder or deacon?

I have been in full time youth ministry for 8 years and have spent 7 of those as an elder in the churches that I have served. I find it extremely beneficial to my work in the church to be at the council and elders meetings. I should clarify that I am ordained within the local church as an elder and not as a ministry associate or minister of the word. Questions that have been posed: What happens if new ministry staff comes on board? Are they automatically elders? Is it healthy for a council led church to have full time staff as a permanent part of council as an elder or deacon? I know the...

Does a US pastor need a license to officiate at a Canadian wedding?

WARNING TO ALL CRC MINISTERS: I have received word that ministers serving USA churches are officiating at weddings in Canadian provinces without first obtaining a licence to do so. Please note that all Canadian provinces, unlike some states in the USA, require advance licensing. Not arranging for such, perhaps through Stated Clerks of the Classis in which the church is located, could lead to a marriage not being legal.

How do Deacons Engage Church Members in Ministries of Mercy?

Do you have deacons spending their time visiting members and handling funds? Or do you have each deacon leading or working with a ministry team of church members that is responding to the poor and hurting people in our community and world? I'm interested in information from churches who have been able to transition each of their deacons to the role of leading and working with a team of members on a ministry focus such as elderly, women, refugees, children, youth, creation care, hungry, etc. Let's talk about how you have engaged members more in mercy ministries.

Is it appropriate to have a classis personnel committee?

Do any classes have personnel committees? I've noticed that a classis and its committees may employ several part and full time persons (stated clerk, treasurer, campus minister, church planter, ministry developer), and because each person reports to a different classical committee, there may be little coordination of expectations, salary reviews, or evaluations.

Is it appropriate to use the tithe for Christian ed tuition?

Crown Financial Ministries says that "when we take a portion of our tithe and divert it to keep our children in Christian schools, it's really a gift in self-interest. Educational costs are your normal responsibility. Therefore, if God wants your children to attend private school, He will provide the funds without your having to divert His tithe for that purpose." Do you agree? Admin Note: This topic has been cross-posted to our Stewardship network. Please add your comments there .

Do church planting principles work when trying to grow an established church?

I've noticed that there isn't a section here in the Network for church growth. I've been doing some volunteer work with my church doing church growth by using some of the same principles as church planting. There has been some good results. Out of curiosity, what other ideas are out there to help reach the community and reach out to those who are away from God, nominal Christians or even those who've been burnt by a church in the past? I'm always trying to find good ideas on helping to increase the church and add to it.

What are some good study materials for learning about the Holy Spirit?

My staff and I are planning on learning together more about the Holy Spirit...how it moves, works, makes itself available...how it fits into our CRC church culture...how we can better understand and be moved by the Holy Spirit. I'm looking for recommendations on books or articles that we could utilize as we learn together. Does anyone have some suggestions for me? Thanks! Tony Meyer

Job Sharing Elder Position?

Our church is having difficulty finding people who will let their name stand for the position of pastoral elder because people say it is too much work. So the question arose: Is it possible to share the job of one elder position?

Do you have suggestions for a Small Group study to help teach some basic principles of community?

Hi All, I'm starting to look for a small group study or other resources for six-weeks that would be the starting point for a relaunch for our church's small group ministry. I'm looking for something that would help teach some basic principles of community. Got any ideas? Got anything that worked well (or not so well)? Mike

What songs praise the Spirit for what he HAS done?

It seems that in the relatively rare instances that the Holy Spirit is specifically called out in lyrics, the song tends toward being a prayer that the Spirit would work in some way. Are there songs that you've sung that praise the Spirit for what he HAS done? I'm particularly interested in roughly CCM-genre songs.

What software or tutorials should we use for basic computer skills classes at church?

Our church is considering offering a basic computer skills class (MS Word, MS Excel, MS Powerpoint) using some donated computers/software. We have a few single parents in our neighborhood that have expressed interest. I could also see some of our older members participating. I am curious if any other church has done this and I'm looking for suggestions on software/tutorials that could be used. Thanks.

Where can I find Tumbleweed Gulch VBS materials?

A few years ago my children attended the Tumbleweed Gulch vbs in a neighboring church. This VBS had a Western theme. We are very interested in using the Tumbleweed curriculum in our church this year. We got most of the materials, but are still missing the drama and promo dvd (with music videos/songs) and the Elementary Bible Stories Leader's Guide. Is there anybody out there who still has those items? Could our church buy them from you? The Elementary Opening&Closing Program Leader's Guide would be helpful as well, but is less important. I contacted the editor of the VBS materials (...
