My dad was a carpenter.

As I grew up, he taught me many things about his work and the approach he would take to each and every project or job. He would share "rules of thumb" that would later frame an ideology for life and ministry. One such statement was not new but certainly impactful for me.

Any project or task you are called to take on, to do it well requires 80% preparation and 20% perspiration.

A new ministry season is almost upon us and so I wonder:

  • How can our preparation for the new season be helpful to those we are called to disciple?
  • What can the local church do to disciple our youth well?

Matthew 7 says this: These words I speak to you are not incidental additions to your life, homeowner improvements to your standard of living. They are foundational words, words to build your life on.

If you work these words into your life, you like the smart carpenter who built his house on the solid rock. Rain poured down, the river flooded, a tornado hit—nothing moved that house. It was fixed on the rock.

How do we develop ministry foundations to disciple well?
