Advisers to Synod 2014

The following is an e-mail from Joel Boot and Dee Recker that was sent this week to all Christian Reformed church councils. We are sharing it here on The Network.

October 2013

Clerk of Council within the Christian Reformed Church

Dear CRC Council Members:

The Office of Synodical Services is in the process of soliciting nominees for service as ethnic and deacon advisers, as well as young adult representatives to synod.

Since 1995, synod has been assisted by up to seven ethnic advisers to each synod. It is our prayer that, in the future, the diversity in the delegation of delegates to synod reaches the desired twenty-five or more persons of color so that the need for ethnic advisers is no longer necessary.

Synod 2010 approved the inclusion of seven young adults to serve in an advisory role to synod. These young adult representatives bring a valuable perspective to the work of the advisory committees and have privilege of the floor during the plenary sessions to offer input into the discussions.

Most recently, Synod 2013 approved the appointment of deacon advisers to synod through Synod 2015, at which time synod will consider the proposed Church Order changes that would include the delegation of deacons to the annual synod.

You are encouraged to recommend the names of ethnic minority members of the CRC to serve in the advisory roles to synod: ethnic advisers, young adult representatives (between the ages of 18-26 years), and deacon advisers (currently serving a local council). The guidelines that have been adopted regarding these three advisory positions are posted at www.crcna.org/SynodResources. Please share these with potential nominees from your congregation and let them know that all expenses for travel, meals, and lodging are covered by the Synodical Services Office.

Synod 2014 will meet from June 13-20 on the campus of Central College in Pella, Iowa. The persons you recommend will need to be present during the full week (including Thursday evening, June 12, through the conclusion of synod).

Thank you for taking the time to consider this special request. Nomination forms for these three advisory roles are accessible on the CRC Synod Resources website at www.crcna.org/SynodResources (in the right-hand side bar). Please ask your nominees to complete their form and to return it to the Office of Synodical Services. You are asked to complete and return the clerk/pastor form. Submissions should be received by January 15, 2014. Appointments will be made by the Board of Trustees in February 2014.

Cordially,
