Universal Design for Community: A Disability Ministry Training Event

You and your church, ministry, or agency are cordially invited to a fantastic training day on September 22 at the Prince Conference Center in Grand Rapids, MI! Please consider attending with your staff and/or fellow church members. Please pass along this invitation to anyone whom you believe may benefit from learning to create communities of belonging.

Church, Belonging, and Community: People who use wheelchairs aren’t the only ones who benefit from curb cuts. So do parents with strollers, young children, bicyclists, and delivery workers. Curb cuts are one example of “universal design”—a way of designing buildings, environments, programs, and events to benefit as many people as possible. When churches utilize universal design principles in planning—whether for discipleship, worship, community engagement, leadership development, or facilities—they create ministries where everyone can belong and participate.

Training leader Cara Milne will give practical information and support so that faith communities can learn to implement a universal design for creating a generous community of welcome and supporting an atmosphere of belonging.

This training will include:

  • What are the words? A look at the power of language and attitudes.

  • How do we decrease stereotypes?

  • What does it really mean to be belong?

  • What does inclusive practice really look like?

  • Where exactly is the community?

  • How do we make sure that volunteers and supports are not getting in the way of possible social connections?

  • How can we build up contribution and responsibility?

  • Where can we begin?

Our afternoon panel will continue to explore issues of belonging and community, this time from a personal perspective. How does a church community appreciate people with disabilities as whole individuals with longings, desires, and personality? These parents and others seeking to deepen connections between people with disabilities and the church will talk about helping congregations move from mere inclusion in church pews to creating communities where each person knows that she is known, noticed, and missed when not present.

Register today! Early bird registration rate lasts until September 1.
