Winter can be an especially difficult time for those who are homebound. Between the shorter days and colder weather, this time of year is tough for many of us. But for people who are dealing with physical illness, have limited mobility, or are struggling with emotional challenges, winter is more than tough. The isolation can lead to feelings of hopelessness or depression.
This need presents a great opportunity for churches and individuals to reach out in tangible ways to homebound individuals.
Perhaps this means offering to bring someone a meal, or, if the person is able, to go out for lunch and a change of scenery. It could mean showing up after the latest snowfall to shovel the driveway or clear a sidewalk. Or maybe there are creative opportunities to plan a game night, organize a craft, or bring a guitar over and sing a few hymns. The options are endless!
Has your church has found any creative or practical ways to minister and show love to those who are homebound (for any reason) during the winter? Or, do you personally try and spread joy and encouragement to a neighbor, friend, or fellow church member who has a hard time getting out?
If so, I’d love to hear some of your ideas for meeting this need!
