Director of Faith Formation Job Description 

Position Title: Director of Faith Formation 

Position Rationale and Overview: 

Neerlandia Christian Reformed Church (NCRC) seeks to intentionally develop a vibrant church in which relationships and mentoring are part of church life across age groups and programs. The Director of Faith Formation will be responsible for taking the lead in working with volunteers and young adult elders to develop and integrate our children, youth and young adult programs in faith formation and discipleship. 

The Director of Faith Formation will: 

1. Foster relationships that nurture the faith life of children, youth, and young adults. 

2. Lead, encourage, support and equip volunteers and young adult elders involved in the children, youth and young adult programs. 

3. Assess current children and youth programs and the materials or curriculum being used - to ensure they are contributing to the ongoing process of growing and deepening their faith. 

4. In consultation with leaders and committees select materials and implement structural changes, with the approval of council, to the children and youth programs. 

5. Promote and provide educational resources and materials that are current, relevant, readily available and easy to access in support of faith development for leaders or family home use. 

6. Promote Christ’s message and teach God’s word appropriate to audience, age and venue. 

7. Identify and oversee leadership development amongst our youth and young adults within the church and our programs and worship services. 

8. Encourage intergenerational relationships and mentoring between youth, young adults and other congregational members. 

9. Seek out opportunities with other Christian Reformed churches for joint youth or young adult activities or events. 

10. Collaborate with other staff and volunteers to incorporate faith formation themes across the spectrum of NCRC’s ministry. 

11. Carry out other duties as covenanted with council, for example, preaching & leading worship. 

Position Responsibilities: 

1. Youth, Young Adult & Education Ministries Support 

a. Attend and participate in the Youth Committee, Young Adult Elder and Education Committee meetings 

b. Leadership Training - collaborate with ministry leaders to identify leadership needs. Source and determine curriculum and implement appropriate training for youth leaders and volunteers. 

2. Teaching 

a. Teach catechism as a regular teacher of a designated grade group

b. Facilitate / teach young adult class(es), as per direction from and in dialogue with Council. For example, the Alpha course or Profession of Faith classes. 

c. Pre-marital counselling – duty shared with Pastor 

3. Pastoral Care 

a. Establish effective communication and build relationships with members of all ages by interacting in group and individual settings 

b. Visit members in the youth to young adult age range with particular needs or in crisis 

4. Lead Worship 

a. Preach and/or lead regular worship as per call agreement and direction from Council 

5. General 

a. Meet regularly with Pastor to coordinate ministry work: pastoral care and duties, service planning, prayer for the congregation and its neighbors 

b. Report to Pastoral Council (copies of reports should be sent to Admin Council) c. Attend Pastoral Council, General Council and Staff meetings 

d. Attend Classis meetings - duty shared with Pastor 

e. Participate in Classical and other ministries upon approval of Council 

Candidate Characteristics and Attributes 

● Relationship with Christ and a commitment to His Church 

● Commitment to working in a team environment with peers, co-workers, and volunteers ● Relationally warm and inviting, possessing a love for God’s people of all ages ● Discernment and ability to navigate conflict 

● Understanding of faith formation as a process of growing and deepening one’s faith, and the ability to lead others through this process 

● Confidence to suggest new ideas and provide direction to volunteers and other church staff as necessary 

● Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize 

● Ability to translate vision and broad ideas into actionable steps for individuals and programs 

● Strong verbal and written communication skills 

Qualifications: 

● Pastoral and/or theological training, ordained or non-ordained in Christian Reformed Church of North America 

● 2-4 years of related ministry experience and/or education 

● Is, or will become, a member in good standing of Neerlandia Christian Reformed Church 

Accountability: 

● Neerlandia Christian Reformed Church (NCRC) Pastoral Council for reporting ● NCRC Administrative Council for personnel matters

Compensation:

A successful candidate will be paid on salary with benefit package included.
