Job Description:

Family and Discipleship Pastor

I. General Church Philosophy and Description

Bethany CRC's Vision, Mission, and Values

Vision: Bethany CRC’s vision is to be a church giving its life for the joy, hope, and inclusion of
all who believe.

Mission: We exist to connect people to Jesus and to one another.

Values: We commit to joyfully learning, worshiping, and serving Jesus while inviting everyone
we encounter to do the same. As a result, we commit to joyfully creating and fostering God-
honoring, life-giving, and loving relationships both in and outside the church.

In light of these values, the Family and Discipleship Pastor (henceforth stated as the F & D
Pastor) is responsible for helping create, manage, and execute the aspects of our church that
encourage Christian maturity and discipleship. This includes (but is not limited to) Students and
Family Ministries, Mid-Week Studies, Outreach, Assimilation, and Pastoral Care.

Reports to: Lead Pastor

• The F & D Pastor must meet and be growing in the qualifications found in 1 Timothy 3:1-7 &
Titus 1:6-9
• The F & D Pastor must demonstrate a clear call to vocational ministry.
• The F & D Pastor must have earned a Bachelors degree (Biblical Studies or a ministry-related
field), though seminary education is desired.
• The F & D Pastor must have sufficient (3-5 years) ministry experience in the area of discipleship from teens to adults.
• The F & D Pastor must fully agree with our statement of faith (The New City Catechism) and
either be a member of or desire membership with our Denomination (The Christian Reformed
Church of North America). See http://newcitycatechism.com and https://www.crcna.org/

III. Essential Competencies and Skills
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Strong administrative, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Able to ensure that all tasks are
done correctly, thoroughly, and with precision.
• A clear conviction that all God’s people are called to be disciples and make disciples. Should
have some expertise in current discipleship methods (small group studies (3-5 people), one-on-one mentoring, "phygital" (combined physical/digital) gatherings, and focusing on spiritual disciplines like Scripture, prayer, and service) as well.
• Maintain a humble spirit and commitment to teamwork with other pastors, staff, and church
members, even if not immediately reflected in one’s job description.
• Maintains appropriate discretion and confidentiality regarding the personal information of the
people of Bethany CRC.

IV. Responsibilities and Expectations
The responsibilities of the F & D Pastor can be broken down into five major categories.

1. Students (40%)
• Oversee and lead all youth and family ministries by partnering with volunteer leaders,
engaging and fostering meaningful connections with students and parents, and continuing to
build upon our relationships both with Young Life ABC and Valley Christian Schools to make faithful disciples of Jesus. This ministry will require a handful of small group studies (3-5 people) and one-on-one mentoring opportunities, both for students and volunteer leaders.

2. Groups (25%)
• Continue to develop and lead our church in a gospel-centered discipleship strategy from Youth Ministry to Adulthood that is consistent with the values and mission of our church. This means helping develop all bible, book study, and life groups (including hosting one of your own) and creating an effective leadership training process for all current and future volunteers.

3. Outreach & Assimilation (15%)
• Continue to develop and lead our church in a strategy to engage, love, and minister to our immediate community. This means dreaming up and co-leading multiple community outreach events and helping create a strategy to ensure all visitors feel welcomed, valued, and cared for when they do.

4. Equipping (10%)
• In concert with the Lead Pastor, help ensure that every member is well-trained to serve the
church, share the gospel, and disciple others. This will require some Preaching, teaching, training, and curriculum planning, as well as the implementation of New Partners, Baptism, and Profession of Faith classes.

5. Pastoral Care (10%)
In concert with the Lead Pastor, visit shut-ins, the sick, the elderly, and the bereaved.

V. Time Commitment/ Staff Culture
The F & D Pastor is a full-time/salaried position requiring between 40-50 hours per week.

Hybrid work model: We do not have a structured “office culture.” Instead, it’s a mixture of working from both the home and the office. That being said, each Pastor is required to be in the church office for at least 60% of their work week.

Given a broader scope of responsibilities, the F & D Pastor will meet with the Lead Pastor weekly to align and execute ministry priorities, goals, and strategies. Likewise, the F & D Pastor must attend all staff meetings, church-wide activities, and any other strategic planning meetings that pertain to them.

VI. Compensation
• The total compensation package for this position, including salary and benefits, is approximately $100,000 annually. Benefits include housing, dental and medical (80% from employer), paid vacation, and holidays. Bethany CRC will provide the use of a three-bedroom Manor House (approximately $36,000 in annual rental income, which includes internet, water, trash, and recycling) as a part of the minister's compensation package. Beyond that, the starting salary range will be between $40,000-$50,000 per year, depending on experience and education.

About

Bethany CRC is a vibrant, 80-year-old Christian Reformed church located in Bellflower, CA, with a growing community of about 220 members and a unique three-building campus in the heart of Southeast LA’s suburban sprawl. At our core, we exist to connect people to Jesus and to one another. Plain and simple.

We believe there is no greater experience in life than truly knowing and being known by Jesus, and flowing from that, knowing and being known by His people. That conviction shapes everything we do. At the same time, we are committed to being meaningfully present in our ever-changing neighborhood, loving our neighbors well, supporting and walking alongside growing families, and faithfully caring for the saints who have paved the way before us.

Our worship is liturgically rich yet accessible, rooted in historic rhythms while remaining clear and engaging for those new to church. We seek to form people through Word, sacrament, prayer, and song, creating space for both reverence and participation. Beyond Sunday, our life together is expressed through discipleship groups, family-focused ministries, and a deep commitment to outreach and mission, both locally and beyond.
