Job Description

The Silver Spring Christian Reformed Church (Silver Spring, MD) is seeking a full-time lead pastor to join our multigenerational, multi-ethnic congregation just outside of the nation’s capital. Our Kingdom Concept: God graciously calls us, in a scattered and isolated age, to be builders of community in which God’s saving word is proclaimed and all are welcomed, fed, and nurtured. The Silver Spring CRC is located in one of the most diverse counties in the country with significant potential for growth and ministry opportunities. Our church currently operates a successful bi-monthly community food pantry in partnership with other faith groups (view this Banner article). We also share our space with Grace Indonesian CRC and a French Cameroon Presbyterian Church. Our seasonal joint services are a small taste of what heaven will be like.

We are looking for a pastor who will serve God and the church by providing Biblical, spiritual, pastoral and visionary leadership within the framework of the church’s overall vision (Kingdom Concept).  The pastor will help promote the spiritual health, growth and well-being of the congregation through preaching, teaching, prayer and administration of the sacraments. The pastor will provide pastoral care of the congregation and support to the Elders and small groups who care for one another, while working in partnership with the Council and the Pastor of Worship, Discipleship and Church Administrator to oversee the work of various committees, educational opportunities, and the outreach ministries.  The pastor will also lead the Council and 2 part-time staff members, mentoring and encouraging their labors for the Lord.

Candidates should be committed to the Reformed tradition and to strong, Biblical preaching and teaching. A M.Div degree or equivalent is preferred. We offer competitive salary and benefits, a spacious parsonage, and a warm welcome to those interested in joining us in ministry. The salary considers the experience of the pastor, with a range of $60,000 - $90,000 annually with an average annual increase for this position between 2.5-3%. The parsonage is adjacent to the church, separated by a wooded area. The parsonage is a spacious home featuring 4 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, and a double car garage.  The two-story house has a full basement for crafts, games, and other possible uses.  The home has been updated many times over the years including a significant refresh in 2024. Other benefits and expenses include: pension, medical insurance, life insurance, travel / mileage reimbursement, continuing education funds, continuous education time allotment, sabbatical policy, and an annual vacation of  4 weeks per year.  Other items are negotiable.  Applications will be received through March 15, 2026 with the ideal transition happening the summer of 2026.

About

Silver Spring Christian Reformed Church was established in 1969.  Silver Spring is part of the Washington DC Metro area – offering outstanding cultural experiences, a beautifully diverse population, and recreational options that suit all interests.  Although SSCRC is only 5 miles from the edge of Washington D.C., it is situated in the midst of a beautiful wooded property – an oasis of nature in the midst of the suburban neighborhood.   Within a relatively short drive to the east is the Chesapeake Bay and the beautiful beaches of the Atlantic Ocean.  A short drive to the west are the Allegheny Mountains and the Appalachian Trail.  In all directions, major historical sites create wonderful opportunities for day trips.  A candidate with children will find quality options for accredited K-12 and K-8 Christian education nearby.

We are a multi-generational and multi-cultural congregation of about 90 people.  The core group still tends to be composed of those with Dutch heritage who have grown up in the CRC; however, there is an ever-growing population that represents the heritage of over a dozen countries from all over the world. We are located in one of the most diverse counties in the country. The congregation includes a variety of professionals and many who work in the public sector.  The congregation consists of a wide-variety of people with a solidly Reformed perspective, yet there is room for diverse perspectives on faith and life matters.

Our worship music blends contemporary and traditional musical styles.  We are fairly connected to the liturgical year with meaningful litanies and rich songs.  Art is frequently incorporated into the service. The worship services at SSCRC are a conversation between God and God’s people. While we don’t have a set liturgy, we do follow a similar pattern from week to week  – God calls and we respond. Sometimes we respond to God’s call in praise and sometimes in confession and sometimes in gratitude. At the center of our worship is the call from God to listen to the Word read and preached. The style of our worship music is a blend of many different traditions. We sing psalms, hymns, gospel songs, taize, and contemporary music. We use the piano weekly, the organ regularly with appropriate songs, and a small praise team every other week.  We also have a strong Children in Worship program for 3-7 year olds.

Silver Spring CRC Mission Statement is a Kingdom Concept stating: God graciously calls us, in a scattered and isolated age, to be builders of community in which God's saving word is proclaimed and all are welcomed, fed, and nurtured.  We live this vision out in multiple Coffee Break offerings, GAP groups that connect us to one another, a substantial Food Pantry program that feeds up to 900 families per month in partnerships with three local groups: Catholic, Jewish, and County government.  We have a community garden, Sunday School, Adult discipleship, and community outreach opportunities.
