PURPOSE: 

To witness Christ to and among migrant communities in South Korea.  While engaged in ministry personally, the goal is also to build awareness and raise the capacity of Korean churches and faith communities to minister to migrant communities through lay empowerment, leadership development, and networking. The desired result is growing communities of disciples of Christ from a variety of backgrounds and ethnicities as Korea becomes increasingly diverse.  This work should also contribute to the vitality of the church in South Korea.  

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES


Local Discipleship and Church Planting Ministry

  1. Develop trusting relationships with migrants and migrant communities at a local level. Share the whole gospel in effective and meaningful ways that are culturally appropriate to the Korean context and among the migrant peoples.
  2. Help believers to take next steps in their faith journey.  Disciple young migrant believers individually and in small group settings to deepen their faith, expand their engagement with scripture and increase their ability to share their faith with others.  
  3. Identify and nurture emerging leaders, equipping them for formal and informal leadership.
  4. Advocate for and cast a vision for ministry to migrant communities.  
  5. Identify and develop long-term reciprocal relationships with national Christian leaders, churches and organizations that share a vision for ministry among migrant communities in Seoul or another suitable city where there are significant diaspora communities.
  6. Work to raise the capacity of leaders for intercultural gospel witness through training, networking, and developing communities of practice relating to the ministry for mutual learning and growth. 

Service to North America

  1. Participate in support-raising (e.g., prayer, care and financial support) for Resonate Global Mission’s ministries by developing and maintaining a network of supporting churches and individuals in North America.
  2. Ensure notes of thanks are sent to donors in a timely manner.
  3. Educate the CRCNA and others about the nature of the global church and its mission, encouraging them to develop a deeper passion and involvement in global missions.
  4. Provide the CRCNA as warranted with insight and resources for ministry among minority racial/national/religious groups living in North America about which the staff member missionary has knowledge and expertise.
  5. Communicate the nature and impact of Resonate Global Mission’s ministries to the CRCNA and others through written communications, and through preaching/speaking engagements.  

     

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & EXPERTISE:


QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Professing membership in a Christian Reformed congregation, or of a church in ecclesiastical fellowship with the CRCNA, and agreement with the doctrine of the church signified by signing a covenant statement. Ordination in the CRCNA is strongly preferred.
  2. Demonstrated commitment to gospel witness and the integral word and deed mission of the church as expressed in Resonate’s foundational documents.  Commitment to living out the Resonate postures.
  3. Demonstrated affinity and passions for ministering among people of different sociocultural backgrounds including the poor and marginalized.
  4. Fluency in Korean.  Commitment to develop fluency in secondary language. 
  5. Demonstrated effective cross-cultural awareness and capabilities.
  6. Demonstrated ability to listen well and empower others for gospel witness and ministry.
  7. Proven capacity to be creative and innovative in complex situations without a predetermined map.
  8. Demonstrated ability to work with others from different cultures and religious backgrounds.
  9. Self-motivated and proven quality administrative and organizational skills.
  10. Ability to travel to and from North America periodically.

     


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  1. B.A. with significant formal or informal study of theology. Commitment to further theological study as appropriate.
  2. Demonstrated practical ministry experience in contexts where crossing racial, ethnic, or other social barriers was necessary.
  3. Training in spiritual formation and a demonstrated commitment to interactive learning are preferred.

****Intermediate Steps

The successful candidate for this position will pass through two intermediate steps before taking up the tasks outlined in this position description; the rate range for each step is included.


Step #1

Missionary Candidate:  The purpose of this position is to prepare for international service by building a network of prayer, care and financial support in North America that will enable future ministry.  Ordinarily, this will progress from part-time to full-time as the support network grows through the work of the candidate and the missionary support team that is designed for this purpose.  One can expect to be in this role for 6-12 months, depending on how quickly the support network comes together. 


Step #2

Missionary in Training:  The purpose of this role is to develop language and culture skills, ministry skills and relationships that will enable future ministry, and begin to use those in ministry.  Ordinarily, one can expect to be in this role for 12 to 24 months, depending on prior background and experience. The pay range for this step is US or Canada on the International scale.
