Job Description

OVERALL PURPOSE AND ROLE: 

Cornerstone CRC pursues excellence in worship and ministry. The Worship Director provides leadership that enriches congregational worship and supports the proclamation of God’s Word. Cornerstone is committed to blended worship that honors the best of traditional and contemporary music. The Worship Director is responsible for all the planning, implementation, and evaluation of public worship services at Cornerstone. They oversee the worship ministry and serve the community by leading, developing, and growing a ministry that glorifies God’s name, celebrates God’s covenantal faithfulness with all our gifts and energy, is rooted in God’s Word, and is meaningful and edifying for members and visitors of all ages. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Worship Leadership 

● Will cultivate and uphold Cornerstone’s vision for worship. 

● Will serve as a member of the worship committee working with them to plan, implement and evaluate worship. 

● Will lead each service of worship, either through direct leadership or by equipping and guiding the work of those who do lead. 

● Will oversee the work of all worship leaders: musicians, vocalists, readers, prayer leaders, choir directors, sound technicians, projectionists, and camera technicians.

● Will attend at least one professional development event per year (e.g. Worship Symposium or local worship conference).

Worship Planning 

● Will work with the pastoral staff to develop plans for worship, including seasonal and special worship occasions. 

● Will craft order of worship that is biblically grounded, pastorally sensitive, and attentive to the spiritual formation and care of the congregation.

● Will plan the liturgy of each service of worship, utilizing the gifts of others as able, so that content, flow and visuals serve and enhance the theme of the service.

● Will explore new resources for worship through reading, research, conference attendance, taking classes and other means that become available. 

● Will oversee the scheduling of worship team leaders, vocalists, musicians, sound technicians, projectionists and camera technicians. 

Worship Implementation 

● Will use a variety of art forms, with particular focus on music ministry. 

● Will discover, recruit, equip and utilize the gifts of worship leaders, teams, musicians, and others (e.g. choir director, readers, prayer leaders) to participate in worship with meaning and competence.

● Will insure the preparation of ProPresenter Presentations for each service. 

● Will communicate and coordinate the efforts of all participants in worship, including guest pastors. 

● Will teach worship team members about what the role of a worship leader is, the role of each worship team member, and how the roles combined function together as a team.

Worship Ministry Administration (quarterly or seasonal)

● Oversee worship ministry budget, prepare and distribute worship committee meeting agendas, support worship planning at Elim Village, maintain sound and projection equipment and repair of instruments (e.g. tuning grand piano), oversee platform design as it relates to sermon series themes and/or church calendar events (e.g. Advent/Christmas, Lent, Good Friday, Easter, Pentecost), participate in setting strategy and implementation of our forward-thinking documents as they relate to worship (see Strategic Plan).

QUALIFICATIONS

● A public commitment to Jesus as Saviour and Lord, pursuing a Spirit-filled lifestyle characterized by evidence of the fruit of the Spirit.

● A person familiar with and committed to upholding Reformed teachings and the doctrinal standards of the Christian Reformed Church, including Reformed worship practices. Also, is fully committed to the vision of Cornerstone CRC. 

● Proven capacity to thoughtfully craft and lead orders of worship that are biblically grounded, pastorally sensitive, and attentive to the spiritual formation and care of the congregation.

● Demonstrates sensitivity to differing styles of music and worship and has an ability to work with these various styles in God‐glorifying, member edifying and seeker sensitive manner that complements other forms of art such as art, drama, and other creative expressions.

● Displays leadership qualities, such as strength of character, humility, good interpersonal and organizational skills, a team player and an ability to work with, encourage and guide a variety of types of people.

● Demonstrated ability to provide pastoral care and spiritual leadership within worship ministry, fostering a Christ-centered, encouraging, and collaborative environment for worship teams and volunteers. Able to mentor, support, and shepherd volunteers with humility, wisdom, and relational maturity.

● Either holds a bachelor’s degree and/or has experience in Worship & Music leadership. 

● Has musicianship abilities which ideally include keyboarding, guitar (proficient in at least one) and vocal ability and is able to work with a worship team. 

● Is expected to become a member of Cornerstone CRC.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS: 

● Full Time salaried position

● Salary Range: $50,000-70,000 depending on experience

WORK SCHEDULE

● Full-time position.

● Sunday worship leadership required.

● Weekly staff meetings, rehearsals and worship committee meetings.

● The Worship Director will be expected to average 40 hours per week. The timing of the necessary hours is up to the requirements of the position and the discretion of the Worship Director. Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as ministry needs require

● Worship Leadership in ministries as requested and agreed upon

As a religious organization, Cornerstone CRC seeks employees who will actively support and advance the church’s mission, values, and statement of faith. Candidates must demonstrate a lifestyle and character consistent with biblical leadership and the qualifications outlined in Scripture for ministry leaders. 

● Reports to: Lead Pastor and in conjunction with the Lead Pastor to the Governing Council.

● Serves on: Ministry Staff and Worship Committee

● This will be a full-time position with an initial three (3) month probation time period.

● After an initial 3-month, probationary period, the Lead Pastor (along with either a member of Governing Council, or the staff liaison or the chairperson of the Worship Committee) will conduct an annual performance evaluation.

● A quarterly written report is to be provided to the Governing Council.

● Location: Chilliwack, British Columbia.

Rooted deeply in the Reformed faith and moving dynamically into the future, Cornerstone CRC has been a pillar of the local faith community since its organization in 1952. While the congregation firmly embraces its foundational Dutch heritage, it is intentionally growing in cultural diversity, attempting to mirror the steady expansion and changing face of Chilliwack.

Led by Lead Michael Koot and Pastor Erik DeLange, Cornerstone is a warm, intergenerational community comprising over 430 members, gathering an average of 200 worshippers each Sunday morning.
