We are seeking a Discipleship Coordinator who will help cultivate in our congregation a culture of lifelong, whole-life discipleship, where people of all ages and life stages are invited to grow in faith, belong deeply, and live out the gospel in everyday life.
The Role
The Discipleship Coordinator will partner with the pastor, council, and ministry leaders to coordinate discipleship and nurture and equip leaders, specifically cultivating pathways that help people take their next faithful step with Jesus—whether they are just beginning to explore faith or have been walking with Christ for many years. This role is as much about relationships and formation as it is about programs and planning.
Key Responsibilities
1. Cultivating a Shared Vision for Discipleship
• Collaborate with church leadership and ministry teams to develop and sustain a coherent, wholistic, Christ-centered approach to discipleship that reflects our congregation’s vision, values, and Reformed theological commitments.
• Help the church see discipleship as a lifelong journey of being formed by grace and sent in love, so disciples reproduce, leaders are nurtured, and the church’s mission and kingdom ministries are strengthened and advanced.
• Discern and articulate clear pathways for spiritual growth across different seasons of life and stages of faith in a way that engages the head, hands and heart.
2. Designing and Supporting Discipleship Pathways
• Develop, coordinate, and support opportunities such as classes, small groups, intergenerational experiences, and one-on-one mentoring relationships that invite people into deeper faith and faithful living. One specific pathway is 222 Disciple.
• Select, adapt, or create biblically grounded, gospel-shaped and culturally relevant curriculum and resources that engage both heart and mind.
• Ensure that discipleship opportunities are accessible, welcoming, and responsive to the diverse needs of the congregation at various ages and life-stages.
3. Equipping and Encouraging Leaders
• Invite, recruit, and train volunteer leaders who are willing to walk alongside others in their faith journeys and shepherd them towards maturity and Christ-likeness.
• Provide encouragement, coaching, and practical support to leaders, helping them grow in confidence and competence as disciple-makers.
• Foster a culture of shared ministry where gifts are recognized, leaders are valued, milestones are celebrated, and no one serves alone.
• Mentor and develop existing ministry leaders to be more effective in their roles.
4. Nurturing Spiritual Formation and Pastoral Care
• Encourage practices that root people in the grace of God, such as prayer, Scripture, study, worship, Sabbath-keeping, solitude, fasting and giving, helping faith take shape in daily life.
• Nurture awareness of and education in the Reformed Creeds and Confessions, with special attention given to the Heidelberg Catechism.
• Coordinate retreats, workshops, and seasonal experiences that invite deeper reflection, healing, and renewal that leads to mission.
• In partnership with pastoral leadership, offer support to parents and spiritual guidance to individuals seeking discernment and deeper faith.
5. Connecting Discipleship and Mission
• Create opportunities for people to live out their faith through service, justice, and local and global mission.
• Partner with ministry teams to integrate discipleship with outreach, worship, and congregational life, especially with children, youth and young adult ministries.
• Help individuals and groups reflect theologically on their experiences of serving, so action and faith grow together.
• Communicate regularly with ministry leaders for encouragement and support, and gather feedback from participants and leaders to assess what is bearing fruit and where new growth is needed.
Desired Qualities and Gifts
We are seeking someone who:
• Loves Jesus and is eager to help others grow in faith.
• Has a pastoral heart, strong relational skills, and a collaborative spirit.
• Is organized, self-directed, and able to work flexibly in a part-time role.
• Has experience in discipleship, ministry, education, and/or spiritual formation (ordination and/or formal training welcomed but not required).
• Is supportive of the mission and theology of the Christian Reformed Church in North America (www.crcna.org).
Compensation and Time Commitment
This is a part-time position, 12–15 hours per week, with an annual salary of $20,000 and IRA match at determined %. For the right candidate, there is openness to exploring additional hours and support-raising in the future as the ministry continues to grow.
Oversight and Review Process
The pastor provides primary oversight with the council providing additional support and accountability. An annual evaluation is conducted by the pastor and member of council.
This includes self-evaluation, goal setting, and review of the job description and expectations. The position is reviewed by council every 3 years.
To Apply
If you sense that God may be inviting you into this ministry, we would love to hear from you. Please submit cover letter and résumé to Pastor Andy Sytsma at [email protected]. Applications will be reviewed as they are received.
