Job Description

SSCRC is looking for a part-time interim pastor who will work with the Council as we transition to a full-time called pastor. The interim pastor will work with our commissioned pastor of worship and discipleship to plan our weekly worship service. We are flexible in what this might mean, but we would hope the interim pastor would preach at least two or three Sundays per month.

We imagine a part time interim pastor applying their unique gifts to SSCRC for a season starting with three months but continuing as long as required and mutually beneficially. The number of hours and expectations would be defined prior to your arrival with an informal contract. Care for our congregation would be a greatly appreciated.

Our spacious parsonage next door is well furnished and ready for occupancy (and guests) at no cost to the interim pastor. We envision an Interim Pastor using their gifts at least half of the week, or multiple weeks in a row, while either maintaining their family ties and obligations elsewhere, or enjoying the museums, history, culture, beauty, nature, and activities of the Washington DC area. Located in the Chesapeake Bay area, with the Atlantic Ocean beach and towns a short distance east and the Allegheny Mountains a couple of hours west, there is no lack of things to do. Three international airports and an Amtrak station can assist your plans.

Flexibility is the key. We are looking for a helpful pastor to shepherd us for a season, which could be a few months before a long-term pastor arrives, or fulfill your desire for a meaningful pastorate in whatever stage you are at in your life and family. Hours, compensation, expectations, etc. are all negotiable. An ordained pastor with preaching gifts are our main requirements.

Please apply before June 15 to [email protected], with a short paragraph describing your interest.  Please also include:

1. when you are available,

2. preferred hours working per week or month,

3. desired minimum and maximum length of contract,

4. top five pastoral gifts,

5. a brief career history including recent positions and education,

6. hopes for a compensation,

7. any other expectations you might have.

About

Silver Spring, Maryland is ten miles north of the US Capitol. The church is best defined as a regional one with 100 members of all age groups from 15 nations. The quiet suburban neighborhood is near many amenities and transportation systems. Many of the members work (or have worked) for the US government or in education.

Silver Spring CRC had a beloved longterm pastor or 26 years.  When he left a STM lead us in preparation for the next pastor. A search team is in place and working prayerfully toward the future.

The church's worship style is liturgical with blended music.  Children in worship occurs simultaneously and Sunday School for all ages follows during the school year. We have three coffee break ministries, one men's Bible study, and several informal groups for fellowship and support. We host two large food distribution evenings per month which we do in partnership with the Catholic Church next door and the Jewish community all around us. We also share our building with the Grace Indonesian CRC, an emerging French Cameroonian congregation seeking affiliation with the CRC, and a fledgling Ethiopian ministry.

Our Kingdom Concept challenges us: God graciously calls us in a scattered and isolated age, to be builders of community in which God's saving Word is proclaimed and all are welcomed, fed and nurtured.
