POSITION DESCRIPTION: SENIOR PASTOR 

Position Summary:

Through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit and under the direction of the Elders the Senior Pastor will lead and unify the church in its purpose of ‘Reaching up to God, reaching out to others.’  As our primary preacher, the Senior Pastor will communicate the truth of the scriptures and our faith to our diverse, multi-generational community.  Having passion for the people, the Senior Pastor will support the four foundational pillars of the church: Image of God, Local Missions, Meaningful Worship, and Hospitality.  

Essential Job Functions and Duties: 

  • Faithfully preach the Word of God in truth and in faithfulness on Sundays to include Maudy Thursday, Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Eve.
  • Lead Sunday School on Sundays before service and occasional Bible Study Series on Wednesdays. 
  • Establish Worship/sermon theme and format.  Coordinate with Administrative Assistant, church staff and other individuals to determine worship order and associated activities, including:
  • Music (piano/organ, praise team, special music, bell choir, etc.
  • Guests (Ferry ministry update, Mission of the Month)
  • Bulletin content (printed prayers, announcements, etc.)
  • Serve as Supervisory position or other church staff. Coordinate with Administrative Assistant and Deacons to handle “help requests” received by the church.
  • Maintain Christian discipline and fulfill as a faithful servant of Jesus Christ, the work of the gospel ministry in conformity of the Word of God.
  • Lead Staff Meetings on Tuesdays and coordinate church business with Administrative Assistant, Pastor of Spiritual Formation, and Consistory. 
  • Support and work with ministries such as:

    Worship/Music Committee

    Technology Committee

    Local Missions Committee

    Congregational Care Committee

    Hospitality Committee

    Facilities/Property Management Committee

    Christian Education and Discipleship Committee

    Food and More Committee

    Thanksgiving Food Baskets

    Meal Train

    Kids Closet

    Small Groups

    Divorce Care

    Grief Share

  • Direct the congregation in administrating the sacraments of communion and baptism.  Edify the congregation through instruction and explanation of the essential truths of God, administer the sacraments, provide accountability and discipline if necessary. 
  • Lead the church in fulfilling the mission and vision goals set by consistory.
  • Organize, lead and direct the consistory meetings excepting in cases when the consistory and the pastor may agree to do otherwise by mutual consent.  Ensure that all elders meetings, consistory and congregational meetings are started and concluded in prayer. 
  • Conduct the regular business of the consistory in accordance with the constitution and by-laws of Ferry Memorial Reformed Church and utilizing Robert’s Rules of Order as guidance in conduct.  Appoint the chairpersons of the committees of Consistory, with Consistory approval, and acts as ex-officio member of the committees of Consistory.
  • Lead in Elders Meetings and call special meetings as the need arises.
  • Organize, lead and direct congregational meetings except in cases when the consistory and pastor may agree to do otherwise by mutual agreement.  congregational meetings shall be held on the first Sunday of:

    May (spiritual well-being of the church, committee/ministry reports)

    November (consistory selections)

  • Direct and equip the congregation to share in responsibilities of Christian leadership in the church, community and Classis.
  • Regularly attends RCA Muskegon Classis Meetings 
  • Attend Tuesday morning breakfasts and support monthly Potlucks and other events such as Block Party and Senior Luncheon
  • Perform strong organizational and communicational skills and prepare a monthly article for publication in the monthly Ferry Log.
  • Ensure compassion and love is met through congregational care and faithfully meet the needs of the congregation through visitations of our sick to include hospital visits, meeting with the elderly and shut ins. Senior Pastor coordinates with the Elders as necessary for visitations. 
  • Perform Pastoral counseling for congregations, church family, weddings/pre-marital couples, the community, and those in need.
