Sankofa Trip October 2022! Registration Now Open

It is with great pleasure that we announce that the Sankofa learning trip is back for 2022!

What is Sankofa?

The term “Sankofa” is a concept from Ghana, meaning we should retrieve things of value from our knowledge of the past. “Sankofa” teaches us that we must go back to our roots in order to move forward. We should reach back and gather what our past has to teach us, so that we can achieve our full potential as we move forward. It is an experiential and relational racial learning experience, enabling African Americans alongside people of other races to journey together and learn about the past, the present, and build relationships to impact the future of racial relations.

When is it? What’s involved?

The Sankofa trip will run from Wednesday, October 19 to Tuesday, October 25, 2022. The trip includes travel from Grand Rapids, Michigan, to Cincinnati, Ohio; Ferguson, Missouri; Memphis and Nashville Tennessee; and Montgomery, Selma, and Birmingham, Alabama.

While on this trip, we will visit museums including the National African American Museum of Music, National Civil Rights Museum, and Equal Justice Initiative Museum. We will visit  historical sites including MLK’s church, 16th St Baptist Church, and Edmund Pettus Bridge. We will also hear firsthand accounts of people who have lived through historical events.

This journey will be incredibly rewarding and a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience African American history and explore key civil rights moments in US history in an experiential way. You don’t want to miss this opportunity!

The trip will cost approximately $700 per person, which includes transportation, accommodations, most meals, and entry to various historical sites and museums. Scholarships are available.

How to Register?

If you would like to put your name forward to participate in this trip, please fill out the application form here: Sankofa Application. Applications will be accepted until September 1, 2022.
