Inspire 2022 Workshop: Is Your Church Safe?

This post is one of many conversations taking place in anticipation of Inspire 2022, set to happen in Tinley Park (a suburb of Chicago, Illinois) on August 4–6, 2022. Sign up to receive Inspire 2022 emails, which include the latest news on speakers, special opportunities, registration, and more. We hope to see you there!

It seems that not a week goes by when you don’t read a story in the news about abuse in the church. As a result, you are keenly aware of how important abuse prevention is.

You know that when someone has been victimized by abuse, the victim/survivor bears the emotional and spiritual wounds of that abuse in their bodies and spirits for years, even decades. You know abuse in the church compromises the good news of Jesus Christ that the church professes to proclaim. You know that church should not be a place where people are hurt. And you want your church to be a safe place where people can grow in their faith and worship God free from abuse.

But you are not sure where to start and the task seems overwhelming. If this describes you, come join us for this Inspire 2022 workshop, titled "Is your church safe?"

In this workshop, we will talk together about common obstacles to abuse prevention in churches and share best practices. We will explore steps that you can take to make your church safer and introduce new Safe Church Ministry resources such as the new Safe Church Assessment Tool.

We will also discuss the dos and don’ts of responding to allegations of abuse.  All are welcome to join us but this workshop will be especially useful for ministry leaders, council members, safe church coordinators and team members, and anyone who is interested in participating in the work of making their church safer.

This workshop will be facilitated by Dr. Amanda W. Benckhuysen, Director of Safe Church Ministry.
