Family Fire: Stoking the Spirit’s flame at home

When God says to parents in Deuteronomy 6:7, “You shall teach [these commandments] diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise,” He makes plain their highest priority in the Great Commission is their own offspring. He calls parents to model loving God with all heart, soul, and strength to their children in the everyday moments of life. We do not bring His love to them alone: God’s Spirit leads us, showing us those “holy moments,” and anchoring us to God’s Word. Wisdom is ours just for the asking. Family Fire from ReFrame Media, continues to explore what it means to lead our children in the faith from a distinctly reformed perspective.

Blessing Our Children. By Joyce Borger. Have you ever sensed that you were part of a holy moment, like Moses and the burning bush? For Moses it came during a routine day on the job. For others it might be a quiet night and the bedtime routine.

Learning to Pray. By Pat Knoester. Prayer brings us into the presence of the God who loves us unconditionally. When our kids are in a lonely lunchroom or enduring taunts and teasing, they need to know that Christ is there with them. He sees all their pain and hears their desires, hopes, and fears.

Connecting Through the Biblical Story. By Robert J. Keeley. Just as shared stories deepen our friendships, the stories of Scripture deepen our relationship with God. We should tell them often and  know them so well they become part of who we are.

Belonging Through Baptism. By Rev. Kirsty DePree. Our kids invite us to experience Jesus’ words—“Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me.” Belonging is more than a term of endearment, or a way to suggest that we like, or even love, each other.
