Our County Juvenile Court is seeking space for teaching classes to young people on parole. We’re conflicted about charging the county rent. Should we or why should we not charge rent for our space? More broadly, what sort of event(s) do you charge rent for in your church building? What events, if any, do you not charge rent for? What sort of form(s) or other contract do you use? Thanks in advance for all of your input?

We have an extensive rental agreement in place. Insurance is always one of the biggest issues. Non-members may not be covered if they are renting your facilities. Members may use the church free but non-members pay rent and hire technical staff if necessary.

We are a small church but we do some rentals - birthday parties in the basement hall, piano recitals in the sanctuary. Unless they are members of the church, they pay hourly rent, provide a refundable damage deposit, and provide proof of event insurance. Other requests, like the one you're asking about, would go to council or the executive for review and they may agree on a lower cost. We host AA/NA meetings and they provide a donation every so often, but are still required to have their own insurance.

After discussion, we have chosen to give the space for free. We too have an NA group and a church “plant” meeting at our church. We haven’t asked them for “rent” but by their own “charter” they do make a donation to us.
