My name is Henry Brouwer, and I serve as one of the regional organizations (Hamilton, ON area) for the CRC's Climate Witness Project (CWP). As a regional organizer, I'm tasked with the implementation of recommendations in the Creation Stewardship Task force report adopted by the CRC Synod of 2012. One of the goals of the Climate Witness Project is to reduce the energy consumption of church facilities. Many churches would be happy to see their facility/operating expenses reduced so that more money would be available for other causes. I would like to show that this can be done for most churches and organizations while at the same time reducing their impact on the creation by lowering energy consumed.

I created a guide to help churches reduce their impact on creation and reduce their facility/operating expenses. The guide includes a simple calculation to show how to calculate the cost of electricity used on an annual basis, 14 energy-saving ideas, and tips for implementation.

Obviously, not all the things mentioned in the guide can be done at once. And there may be additional opportunities as well. These energy-saving ideas could possibly be assigned to your property committee or some individuals who may be passionate about this.

Click here to download the guide, and visit for more resources about climate change and energy stewardship.

Has your church implemented any energy-saving strategies? We'd love to hear them!

The church I belong to decided when it started to rent facilities rather than own them. This frees space for others and we only use electricity when we use the building. Of course it is up to the building owner to be a wise steward.
